Is it me or does this game only go as far as the end of stage 2 and then locks up?

yup, same thing here.
I think Barry said something about it not locking up on certain versions of MAME, but it happened to me on both DOS and MAME32.

I'm not entirely sure on it, that's only what I've heard (ie: I haven't beaten stage 2 yet).
If you want to see the rest of the stages you can either change the start level setting, or make a save state just before you beat the boss, then restart MAME and continue from there.

It's a protection issue,but sometimes the game works fine even without a save state.If I'm not wrong R.Belmont already fixed that...
