Help, how to actually play River Patrol?

Silly topic, but I have been completely unable to find any tips about this game through Google.

Despite the hearsay, River Patrol is clearly about people chaining. Problem is, sometimes a person will just die when the boat reaches them, which means no points and a broken chain. I've tried everything I can, but I have no idea how it works or how to avoid it.

Does anyone know anything about this game? This isn't random, is it?

I don't know the answer to this, it does seem random if you kill a person or pick them up, you can of course check out the masterful play of

to see if you can spot anything worth reporting.

Conditions in which the chain is broken:
1. A person by the ship died.
2. The person has disappeared from top of the screen, or under.
3. You lost the ship.
4. Stage finished.
5. Game is over.

Conditions in which a person dies is not clear, but it is almost the following conditions.
1. It is in a state in which the ship is not inclined.
2. A person touched near the tip of the ship.
(If just the person moves right or left, I think as the person may not die.)
