configuring controls for new versons of Mame

Having problems with changing controls on New versons of mame.. I figured out how to do this.. Then all of a suddan when messing with the controls .. Then going out and restarting Mame.. I get the program has caused a problem and needs to close. Then it reverts back to the old settings .

I had a few of my newer versons of Mame working. Now each time i mess with the controls for a certain reason i'm getting this problem. Then i can no longer use it with my x-arcade system.

anyone know what has changed that is causing this?

I usually have to reconfigure controls when changing between mame versions, I try to avoid this by using separate folders for each mame version, but i usualy mess up and run a different mame in the same folder and it nukes my configs.

strange there not being used from the same folder.. Folders are on my desktop but that should'nt cause a problem?
swear this is happening since windows updates this week..
