wow, new parent for mario bros? what was old one renamed to be?
new asteroids parent? wow.

quake? interesting...bet that runs great through mame emulation...likely no opengl accelerated support for that either. blah!

mario -> marioe "Mario Bros. (US, set 1)" -> "Mario Bros. (US, Revision E)"

As far as the classics go... lupin3 and sbasketb are also new parents.

steelwrk is worth checking out, as it is a very rare game where the perhaps the last PCB was found in a pile of 130+ misc. boards for sale.

If the original arcade setup used 3D hardware acceleration, then MAME will emulate that too. In software. :)

It's steelWKR.

Tried it...not sure if it's a lost gem...
#-o :)

I've pointed out to MAMEdev that the new Mario Bros. romset is almost certainly not the latest revision so shouldn't be the parent romset. The new mario romset contains a defect that was definitely and explicitly fixed in the marioo and marioe romsets. Hopefully MAMEdev will rename the sets again soon and make marioe the parent romset again since it looks like it's actually the latest revision.

If you try out the new mario romset you'll find the bug pretty quickly. You'll be in for another surprise if you play the game up to 980K.

that's my whole point....imagine the speed!! oh, I can see...hmmm... 3-5 fps maybe? hardly playable....need full opengl acceleration to even get 20 fps through mame IMHO.

Try some of the Seattle/Vegas hardware games to get an idea of that, since those use 3DFX Voodoo video hardware. At a guess, I'd say that the Quake cabinet doesn't use as powerful a CPU as those.

true...but odds are was something like a 166-200 Mhz pentium 2 or something similar.

so does mame have the 3dfx->opengl translator in it now to support the 3dfx games?
if so...yeah with modern CPus it might run at least at 20-30fps...which is enough to be semi-playable.

MAME has fine software emulation of the 3DFX Voodoo, it is not translated to OpenGL or Direct3D. The main issue would be better emulation of the x86 CPU (presuming that's what it uses).
