Just watched the recording by Jonathan Gawne. Level 58 reached, no secret rooms. Playing style more towards clearing the levels, sort of Gauntlet 1 style... while I personally prefer to get through levels as fast as possible. running through if possible.
Yes, you can get secret room many times in one game.
Back in the day the tactic was that one player build up huge health and then other(s) joined.
And remember, every time you're at level 42...you HAVE TO sing, or at least say the magical words "running in the family"...which was a hit back then.
Watched this myself a couple days ago. He sure knows all the levels inside out and has a plan for every one. Also remarkably sharp with the diagonal firing through gaps from a distance and takes no chances with the thief. Well done Jonathan!
Reminds of the days I was obsessed with the original Gauntlet, playing all day or all night in the bar for 10p much to annoyance of the management who in some premises simply reset the machine if you were on it for more than a few levels. Unfortunately we never had a local Gauntlet II machine so never really got into that as much.

Yes, and he should definitely go for it!
Great play, building up health to 10 000 while avoiding points for up to around 250k before going for 8000-deaths. This is how it was played in the arcade...I thought the levels game gives you are too difficult for building such health...appears I was wrong.
Great tactics, great execution. I especially liked the way he handled the dragons. Entertaining playback session.
