I don't know what's up with MAME Dev, but these chuckleheads decided to merge all these bios files with the MAME games. This creates a problem for us in tracking real games, so I tried to determine what was a non-playable bios file and immediately archived all of them. List is as follows:

*acpsx "Acclaim PSX"
*aleck64 "Aleck64 PIF BIOS"
*alg_bios "American Laser Games BIOS"
*ar_bios "Arcadia System BIOS"
*atluspsx "Atlus PSX"
*atpsx "Atari PSX"
*awbios "Atomiswave Bios"
*bctvidbs "MPU4 Video Firmware"
*cd32 "Amiga CD32 Bios"
*cpzn1 "ZN1"
*cpzn2 "ZN2"
*crysbios "Crystal System BIOS"
*cvs "CVS Bios"
*decocass "DECO Cassette System"
*hng64 "Hyper NeoGeo 64 Bios"
*konamigv "Baby Phoenix/GV System"
*konamigx "System GX"
*kviper "Konami Viper BIOS"
*macsbios "Multi Amenity Cassette System BIOS"
*mac2bios "Multi Amenity Cassette System 2 BIOS"
*maxaflex "Max-A-Flex"
*maxf_ng "Maximum Force (No Gore version)"
*megaplay "Mega Play BIOS"
*megatech "Mega-Tech BIOS"
*naomi "Naomi Bios"
*naomi2 "Naomi 2 Bios"
*neogeo "Neo-Geo"
*nss "Nintendo Super System BIOS"
*pgm "PGM (Polygame Master) System BIOS"
*playch10 "PlayChoice-10 BIOS"
*psarc95 "PS Arcade 95"
*skns "Super Kaneko Nova System BIOS"
*stvbios "ST-V Bios"
*sys573 "System 573 BIOS"
*taitofx1 "Taito FX1"
*tps "TPS"

does this mean that all roms that have used seperate bios.zip will now have to be updated to run on 118 and later, or is there a new bios.zip that has all of them in it? For pain in the ass-ness, I'll assume the first. 118 crashes everytime for me, and Phil says it's running some games slow(though it sure doesn't seem so when playing, so I'll take his word for it).

No, it just means that MAME can run the BIOSes on their own.

ok, so which is it?

bios-es integrated into mame itself or integrated with the rom sets instead of being a separate driver/bios zip file?

Basically just runs the BIOS, without any game attached.

For example, Neo Geo just cycles through hardware tests and settings. ST-V has a nice little intro. Some may just display errors.

ohh, I see...just runs the basic hardware mode for the system.

like the consoles or handhelds without any game cart inserted.
