I have an older Mac at home with an 030 processor and when I try to play MAME it will start but only goes very, very slowly so that I can't play. This is from the downladed MAME for non-PowerMacs. Any help is appreciated.

You can try using a frameskip of 3 - I don't know how you do that on the Mac version - on the PC you can put '-frameskip 3' on the command line, or hit F8 3 times.
