Marp Election 2006 - Open Discussion for Candidates/Editors

Please use this thread for open discussion on the Candidates and Editor Confidence Votes in the upcoming 2006 election.

For example, it might be interesting for the general MARP community to read posts from each of the editors regarding what it is they do on a regular (and irregular) basis. I've been fairly active at MARP, the forums, and #marp for over 2 years, and I still don't really understand much about what each of the editors does. In order for the community to have a better understanding, this is an opportunity for each of the editors to explain what it is they do and have done in the last year. This is, of course, optional, but I think it would help myself and others understand MARP better.

In addition, this thread would be a good place if any of the candidates for Knockout Chairman or Regulation Coordinator would like to say anything.

Finally, if anybody has any open questions for the Candidates or Editors, please post them here.

What about yourself?

You said you were interested in being Regulation Coordinator. Why? What do you think you could do from that position to make MARP a better place?

I was planning on posting something along these lines, so here goes.

MARP, in my opinion, is the best MAME replay site on the web. I love its history. I love its depth of quality recordings, while still encouraging participation from everybody. And I love its broad international participation. Since MARP has meant a lot to me, I'd like to contribute something to it in return.

I'm sure Phil will do a great job as Regulation Coordinator if he ends up in the position. He has a very deep understanding of a broad cross-section of games, and as such is perhaps the most qualified person for the position. Nevertheless, I'll be a realist here and say I strongly suspect Phil will continue to drive appropriate regulations even if he's just an Editor and the leaderboard leader. If I'm the Regulation Coordinator, MARP will get to have both Phil and me working for the site.

As far as what I'd like to bring to the position, it is direction, consensus, and follow-through.

I believe the Regulation Coordinator should actively be proposing rules for new games and addressing rule problems on old games, rather than just reactively responding to complaints.

I also feel the Regulation Coordinator should build consensus for decisions rather than acting solely on his own opinion. I would encourage discussion on rule decisions, and if there is dissent, put decisions to a poll. In this I feel the Regulation Coordinator is quite different than the coordinators of the competitions who I feel need to act as benevolent dictators. Regulation decisions can have a deep and permanent impact on the recordings which end up at MARP, and in the enthusiasm and loyalty of its members.

I'm also very detail oriented and would commit to driving decisions to a conclusion. If there is discussion on a rule, I believe it should be driven to a decision and the decision implemented.

Finally, MARP, like any project, needs new energy infused on a regular basis. I strongly believe MARP can grow to be richer and more active, and the only thing that will prevent that is stagnation.

Cheers,
Zhorik

"Now there's another thing I want you to remember. I don't want to get any messages saying that we are holding our position. We're not holding anything. Let the Hun do that. We are advancing constantly and we're not interested in holding onto anything except the enemy. We're going to hold onto him by the nose and we're gonna kick him in the ass. We're going to kick the hell out of him all the time and we're gonna go through him like crap through a goose."----General George S. Patton

I've decided to withdraw as a candidate for regulation coordinatir. My first responsibility is as the election coordinator and its not fair for me to push part of that responsiblity onto others with little advance warning. Maybe next year.

Besides, I'm sure Phil will do a great job.

Voting starts in less than 21 hours.

As a side note, I think QRS should voluntarily step down from the editor position due to inactivity.

Maybe. I guess we'll never know.
