Reward: $50 (usd)

Deadline for submission to MARP: July 14, 2006 2359 hours GMT

Further Bounty: none

Okay you DonPachi zombies. This is probably as close as you're going to get this year.

In this game you're a tire...alternating between the "alien course" and "highway course". In the highway course you can't shoot, you just collect points and dodge the "cars". In the alien course you run an obstacle course of rocks and shoot at alien insect-like things. It has an appealing element of speed that these games usually lack.

I actually enjoyed playing this one, but it gets kind of repetitive pretty quickly. The bonus stage is exactly the same every time around....those sufficently talented will be able to do it with their eyes closed after a few times.

Random prize: One player scoring in excess of 100,000 points, selected randomly from those who do, will receive, soon to be "officially" released on DVD (Amazon.com says it will be released on October 31), the 1983 cinematic classic Joysticks starring Joe Don Baker as the corrupt city councilman trying to shut down the local arcade. This one has a rating of 3.4 on IMDb, but also has a topless woman playing Pac-Man. How bad can it be?

Thanks for putting this game up for the week. I've never played it until now and I really like it.

Finally suffered all the way through this turkey.

Glad everyone seems to like the game, because the movie stinks on ice.

And about the game...I'm encouraged to see the early submissions so tightly grouped in score. Perhaps the difficulty of the game increases to the point that the experts will be sufficiently challenged after all.

The game gets really difficult around Stage 10 I think. I don't believe that the game can be "easily marathoned" since lives are limited and even on the early levels it's easy to screw up on the highway portions.

Does anybody know what determines which Bonus Stage you get, anyway?

You can get 10, 15, or 20 bonus tags in the bonus stage. The longer ones are the same as the shorter with the additional length added on.

Which one you get appears to be related to the number of 300 point tags you collect in the alien and highway courses. In your 292k recording, by my count, on the stages where you collect 23 and 24 of them you got the 10 tag bonus stage. On the stages where you collected 27 to 29 of them you got the 15 tag bonus stage. On the stages where you collected 31 to 35 of them you got the 20 tag bonus stage.

Figure the cutoff for the 15 tag stage must be about 25 and for the 20 tag stage maybe 30.

Wonder if a 25 tag bonus stage is possible?

Bonus Prize Offer:

A 2006 GEGOTW t-shirt to the first player to either get a 25-tag bonus stage or prove that it doesn't exist by collecting every 300 point tag on the alien and highway courses.
Please note the accomplishment in your upload description.
EDIT: Claimed by Valter "TRB" on 7/9/06

Joysticks is not *that* bad, there are even worse movies. Nice 80's feeling in it, and hey, videogames. I gave this masterpiece a 6 at IMDB, raising average rating massively.
Author: DarthBob from Minnesota

A beautiful majestic and taut thriller set against the backdrop of a suburban video arcade. Joe Don Baker gives us a towering performance as the cliched angry parent wanting to shut the arcade down. It's amazing that even now, 20 years later, the film still inspires, still excites and still amazes even the most jaded movie viewer. If there is a God, I know that even he must get a smile on his face from the pointless nudity and hours upon hours of video game playing that this movie portrays with such raw tenacity and such POWER! 10/10. Long live "Joysticks!"

Well, apparently it is possible to get even more 300 point tags on other later stages, but that meets my challenge.

Looks like Valter could start a GEGOTW t-shirt franchise down there!

You want the same size on both, or do you have a different-sized friend you would like to give one to?

Thanks! The same size at this moment.
As I never was 1st placed on GEGOTW (well, played only a few times), my main goal is being to capture the T-shirts... lol

I agree that game can't be easily marathoned. But game looks easier on later (from level 10) levels because is more pattern.

PS. This game has nothing common with DonPachi or other shmup.

Patterns or no patterns, I don't know how you can find the game easier from stage 10. 8O EVERYTHING about the game is harder from that point on.
