PRE POLL discussion: Mame versions allowed at marp, no u's

I was thinking to make a poll about if we should NOT allow mameU releases here at marp. They are versions targetted for mame developers. Allowing these makes just more mess, because releases come quite often at current rate.
So I'm saying we shouldn't allow mame94u1 etc...but players should wait for release of mame95 untill they submit....actually wolf95!!
Same goes for wolfie U releases. I don't think Barry would be willing to make a new wolfie each U release anyway
Before end-of-the-poll submitted u release recordings are ok though, obviously.
What do you think?

Well sometimes an U version fixes some critical bug left in a non-U version, i'm thinking about the 091u1, in that case it should be allowed.
And i don't think barry wants to do a wolfie version for each U release anyway

No, I don't wish to have to upload every single update release
But, I do produce one version for each major release - however it's not possible to do a non-update version when Haze decides on u1 within 2 days, and the MAME Plus guys take their time with a release.
Basically, I'll make one update after each major release, and maybe the odd extra if there's some major addition/bugfix.
I'd certainly use 0.87u1 over 0.87 anyday.

Even though there is not wolfmame for u release in question?
You'll have 50 u releases in a year haunting at harddrive +some roms in each of them roms folders.
Can not practise using u and wait for official release for couple weeks? Patience Des, patience...

Since we allow MacMAME recordings that 98% of MARP members cannot watch, and more exotic versions of PC MAME which members would have to search the internet for in order to watch, it would seem to me unfair to disallow official MAME update versions.
I would not therefore be in favor of specifically banning them.
I
would however, be in favor of designating an OFFICIAL MARP version of MAME and requiring its use. The obvious candidate would be WolfMAME, but since its developer and Zwaxy himself have expressed opposition to such a mandate, it will never happen...at MARP.

MacMAME has always had "official" release versions also. There are several nonofficial versions that I wouldn't ever want to be accepted by MARP or TG etc. We have almost as many unofficial builds as PC guys have. The last official build was from a few months ago. We have had around 10-20 unofficial build releases done since...many where the binaries aren't even released...just the source and project where you can build it yourself.
As you can see anyway, the attitudes of many members of MARP have it where MacMAME players don't really participate here anymore....not that they ever did participate at a large level.
There are several reasons for that. One of which is the flip-side of what you state above...
Most complain about MacMAME replays cuz they can't watch most of them. Well guess what!... That hardly matters cuz these same members bitch and moan about ones they can even view in PC-MAME....still claiming some cheating must be going on. It's sad. It's also egotistical that PC players think they are all the top gamers...and no one from any other platform can compete with them.
Think about this...MacMAME players come here and find that 98+% of all replays they can't watch. This alone turns away most from participating at MARP. That didn't matter to me. I rarely watched replays. Most I watched were MacMAME ones to confirm their scores...so at least they get their scores confirmed. At least you PCers can view most replays...just not a handful of MacMAME replays....get over it. You have it far better than any other platform users here at MARP...yet you guys are doing most of the complaining?!?
I no longer participate at MARP in regards to submitting scores/replays and have no intentions on doing so in the near future....as I still only have my Mac.
The chance of my getting a PC has passed now...cuz I took that money and used it as a down payment for a new car. The car is pretty sweet though...treated myself some. I think my potential trip to Funspot is off now also.
However, my girlfriend does have a 1.3 GHz PC...not great...but where I maybe can get wolfmame running on that and play now and then(?).

This discussion is not about macmame, xmame etc vs pc mame. Neither is this about official mame vs wolfmame.
xmame and macmame are allowed at marp...Because Zwaxy says so. period.
As it is now, wolfmame is still preferred pc version to submit. It's unwritten rule that actually could be written at marp rules page, such as: "Wolfmame is preferred over official mame"
This discussion is mainly about allowing, or not allowing use of unofficial "u" -update mame versions.
Thanks for your input

Maybe it would be best if wolfmame didn't depend on mameplus...
That would make it less unofficial (or something).
I remember alphamame was like this... tsk tsk

It's based on MAME Plus to encourage more players to use it - MAME Plus seems to be quite popular, especially with japanese players.

Hehe you bet

The sound fx are kind ehhrm creepy though hehe
I have to admit that there are a lot of U's before the official builds, but that is not any different than the old system with 37b3, 37b4 etc. We all admited these versions (even if they were not released this fast!!)
I have nothing against waiting for an official build before I submit scores though. I don't find the official version any more or less beta then the unofficial versions btw. And that goes for the old system as well hehe.

Not true!! Those releases were essentially monthly updates over at least a year. In fact they were pretty much renamed to m38 to m52...
With the m94u1, that is a weekly or twice-weekly release. VERY DIFFERENT!!
As clearly pointed out by TJT, we have already had 4 U releases in two weeks!!
That's exactly why I don't bother. There is already a lot of work for the more significant releases. And this is all beta code, we are not even at version 1.0
Pretty soon we'll see mame 0.99.01 u1
