Ok, this is about as off topic as you can get! Does anybody here know anything about guitars, bass in particular? QRS I know you play (or used to play) in a band, anyone else?

Basically I'm looking for some advice and I can't be bothered to sign up to anymore forums at the moment

I've played mainly guitar for 30 years now, but have played bass also during that time off and on. What do you need to know?

Well, I'm just starting out wanting to learn the bass. I have been messing about on an old one my friend lent to me but it's a bit old and knackered so I'm going to buy a new one.

Do you have any suggestions on a decent starter bass? I know pretty much to stay away from Squires but I don't know anything about any other makes. I'm thinking of getting an Ibanez as they seem to be quite highly rated as a good starter. Do you reckon they are any good? I'm only looking to spend about £200 ($350ish) so I'm on a bit of a budget.

Ibanez makes a very acceptable guitar/bass for starting out on. I think you'll be OK with that choice.

How do you plan on learning once you get the bass? Formal lessons? For me, I started out that way (lessons) for about 6 months and then simply began using my ears to figure out songs that I liked. After that, I became interested in music theory at college so that I could make sense of what I was playing and how it all relates to itself. Lessons from a good teacher are a real help as it will give you a decent foundation from which to learn from.

Sorry for not answering this post earlier. My main reason was that I suck at playing guitar and bass. The only guitarr related I can play is bluegrass and some folkmusic. I know the basics of course, but I'm sure you have that knowledge already and if not John has tons of more knowledge than me! The other reason is that I suspected that John would answer this and as always I can only agree to his wise words

Well I really am starting out at the beginning having never even put on a guitar let alone play one. I got my new bass a few days ago and have just been sort of strumming around, trying to get a feel for the notes etc. I may give you or John a shout if I having a question on anything if that's ok.

I'm in the process of looking through the Yellow Pages for some local teachers, I guess that's the first step.
