The infamous 1942 bug: when does it occur?

Sometimes when I play 1942, the game stops rewarding extra men based
on the score.

In history.dat this is documented as follows:

"Here's an interesting bug in 1942 : If you win an extra man by crossing the xxx points mark when killing the "boss" bomber, no extra planes will be awarded on the basis of points! Extra planes can still be obtained by getting the black-and-red POW, but no point-based bonuses will be awarded for the rest of the game. "

But I don't understand this. Even when I play trying to avoid this situation, the game sometimes stops rewarding extra men.
And when you look at this recording from negative1: http://marp.retrogames.com/inp/0/0/8/rg ... _win61.zip
you will see he gets extra men rewarded even though he shoots down the "boss" bomber while crossing the "extra" points mark.

I don't understand.

Any insights will be appreciated!

Maybe you can give him an answer instead Hisa? As I'm 100% sure that you know why ;)

1942's extend system is a little curious.

"add 1 ship" when "first time to <8th(10M) and 7th(1M) digits of score are ZERO. and 6th(100K) and 5th(10K) digits of score as extra points.>".

Example.
240,000 points is an extra points.
you will usually get an extra ship when your score over 240,000 points.
but "to above 240,000 points" is not essential matter.
you can get an extra ship when your 6th digits become "2" and 5th digits become "4" for the first time.
and extra points will be changed when this action does.
If you jump over "the score which can satisfy this" , then you will never get an extra ship any more.

If you get 100% destruction and 3 rolls remaining (53,000 points) when you have 220,000 points.
your score will be 273,000. your score never become 24*,***.
if so, you can not get any new ship even if you reach next extra points (320,000) .
extra points will be changed when you get an extra ship.

PERFECT =50,000.
95%+ DESTRUCTION=20,000
90%+ DESTRUCTION+LOOPS=13,000.
and to beat big ship is worth 20,000 -50,000 points.
If you destroy them at bad timing, you will lost many ships. you must careful.

Sorry for bad language. but I wish you can understand what I want to say.

Makes sense to me :)

If an extend is expected at 240,000, you have to get a score of 24x,xxx, otherwise no more extends. Or something.

Oh yeah, and Merry Christmas to all. (12:09am NZDT)

Another thing that has caused much confusion is the lame thing that when you get 100% it shows you get 10k!! As Hisa points out it is 50k. First time I got 100% on a stage I said "ehhr what? why should I bother with 100% and 10k.. instead of 99% and 20k??" It took me a long time before I actually looked at my score and saw that it was 50k I got.. not 10k ;)

Aah FINALLY that clears it up for me! Thanks a million! =D> It was driving me insane!

Also I was wondering about the 50000 score for perfect, but I see QRS already answered that ;)

Thank you both and merry Xmas!

BTW Novice, no recording for 1942 of you?

Hisa,

How come you removed your 7nt_1942_14158180_mame55.zip file? Are you trying to make a better recording? Was there something wrong with that recording?

I also remember at one point you were going to go for a new record for starforc to beat your 10.2 million inp currently here on MARP. Are you still working on that?

Cheers,
Tim

Translation:
Jump over 10,000 points more than extra score, extend will be stopped.
kill each 250 ships, then appear yashichi (5,000 bonus)
Strike 53 shots for the big boss at last 2 stage, and suicide.
Kill middle ship by side-fighter strike, it is worth 10,000 points.
perfect=50,000. good luck.

One addition: The Game stops rewarding extra's when the score > 1M

Funny, I just checked my scoring progress so far

feb '04: 200K
mar '04: 302K
jun '04: 400K
sept' 04: 478K
oct '04:500K
dec '04: 593K, 743K, 866K
jan '05: 1.1M

still 12 undiscovered stages to go  (I only play the replays upto my highest levels)

I've been playing the game for years, but started playing it seriously feb '04. For now my goal is finishing it! I hope the above trend continues
