Not MAME related - Install/uninstall problems

I just got a strange and very irritating problem... I hope some of the gurus of MARP might help me with this!

I can't install anything right now... and not uninstall either! The problem occurs only with Install shield wizard.. (about 99% of all games anyway!)

The error I get is this: "the game/program could not be installed due to the system beeing busy. Nothing in the system has been modified. Try again"

I have never seen this before.. and I have tried almost everything.. shuting down almost any program and tasks in the background..virus scans, scandiscs. And yes, I have restarted my PC.. 20 times already :) Nothing helps..

I use windows xp, sp2

Barry? Chad?

ANY help appreciated!! HELP ME! :)

Have you tried turning off system restore. Just a thought.

Damn.. It didn't work :( I really hoped that should work.. as it seemed to be a very good reason for my problem...

btw, when i try to uninstall a program/game it starts the uninstallation procedure first.. but when the unintallation should start.. no error occurs.. just that it stops and nothing happens. looks like the program that runs the thingie doesn't work. No idea why :(

Maybe this helps.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... US;Q315346

Make sure you turn on system restore first, before regeditting...

BTW, fi something goes terribly wrong, when editing windows registry...

Atleast at 98 you can restore settings(if you can not get windows to start anymore) press ctrl at startup, command prompt only...type scanreg /restore (in windows/system/ directory...maybe xp it's windows/system32/)

Or at windows... click start, run, msconfig ...restore backup(or create)

This is just incase you don't sue me if your machine goes messed up

Thanks for your help Tommi. I might have come a little closer to what's wrong now.. even If I can't fix it :(

It seems that I'm missing the "services" folder in the registry!

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer

I have NO idea what might have caused this... as I just browsed my other two PCs and found them... there are A LOT of stuff in there.. so I have no idea what else isn't working :(

Anyone who know what can cause a folder like this to disappear?

I think you have to do "method 2" at link I submitted previously.

Problem is: "Windows Installer 2.0 is included with Windows. You do not have to perform this step if you use Windows XP."

I think you have to perform the steps before, but how to install ONLY msi2.0 from XP CD beats me.
Installing msi2.0 should make necessary changes to registry?...

It's version 3.0 if you have installed SP2, if I remember right. Check your services list to see if it's listed there (Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services). On my system, it's not running, but set to manual (I guess it runs when it's needed). There is a way to add services via the commandline, which I can't remember right now. It's documented in Windows' Help somewhere...

on an off shoot, i hesitantley upgraded to SuckyPack 2 and for one i actually liked one thing that microsoft did. They made Explorer have an setable automatic popup blocker and active X disabled silent feature, one long awaited applaus from me after much previous bickering. Now only if they could have added an automatic ad blocker...

Installed XP +sp2 yesterday. Touch of stability+ slowness.
Now I have both XP an 98 at my home computer.
I have same desktop background as QRS 8O

My conclusion is...There's no reason to put down MAC :x

I have sp2 on all my pcs and I think it is ok. I a different firewall and no virus protection and no warnings etc. After that it works like a charm!

The only thing I get irritated of (and that is soooo microsoft..) a popupblocker that says it stops the popup windows--??? with a small popuplist? gesh...

What puzzles me is security center...It shows firewall is on, if I select manage security settings for win firewall, there it shows off...
I have Zone Alarm firewall program installed, maybe security center sees that I use it and thus informs that(some) firewall is on. Then that off should mean that xp don't use SP2 firewall. Ahhh, confusing.

Also the difference between command.com and cmd.exe is a bit confusing, if running dosmame.

Wonder how much resources msnmessenger uses and if it can even be uninstalled.

Played wolmame, xp tried to save inp at my documents folder, Good I hate documents folder. At different version inp was saved at inp folder, wonder why.

Also installed firefox, but I'd much rather play it.
Well, maybe XP will be good when get used to it...
