Like anything pre-MacOS X? :)

*remembers Macintosh Classics and shudders, thinking of the piss-small monochrome monitor*

Windows XP is very stable, thank you very much. As is Linux. Windows Me = evil incarnate. :)

We were getting a little far afield here.

Nothing to do with GEGOTW, so I moved the discussion here.

At least Windoze is more friendly for those who prefer to use the keyboard.... something that the Adobe Reader developers would do well not to go out of their way to interfere with.... I can't believe that they implemented code in the keydown/keypress event of their TextBoxes in that piece of junk to interfere with standard Windoze keyboard shortcuts....

Perhaps my ranting e-mail made a difference as they fixed that particular misbehaviour in Adobe Reader 6.0. :)

Then again, maybe with OS X Pipsqueakers have improved things on the Mac..... not sure I want to find out though....

..true but even back then that was superior to the MSDOS or Win 2.x we had back then.

Win 2.x and even 3.0 was pure evil back then....almost useless cuz slowness and many bugs. No MacOS was ever like that. MSDOS was a solid basic OS...but limited.

I used PCs also that were very limiting compared to my Mac. At least we had Multifinder even back then. It's only in the past few years that I haven't regularly also been using PCs.

Yes, with XP they perhaps are getting it right now...but I still see how easily that OS is hacked or has security leaks or is so susceptible to viral attacks...especially e-mail attacks.

We don't have that issue in OS X. Sure, it's potentially there....but hasn't happened. I think it goes beyond just the #users also. Something obviously is amiss with an OS that is so easily attacked and hacked...and has a mother(M$) attempting to spy on them through the OS....thus responsible for many of the net security leaks.

Why was this redone as a new thread?!?

I've never known anyone to use any version of Windows prior to 3.0.

I don't seem to remember so many issues like this with previous versions of Windows NT... Not so many used those either.

We had software for one of the labs I was working in that ran within Win 2.x. it was ghastly! In file management if you wanted to delete 100 files from a folder, you select them and trash then go away and come back in 15 minutes and hope it was done!

I always shelled out to MSDOS for file management and just about anything else outside of that software where deleting those 100 files would take only a few seconds.

This was software to run instrumentation so I had little choice but to use it.

True... I still think it goes beyond just the number of users though...otherwise the percentages would suggest there would be at least a handful of active viruses and/or trojan horses and certainly e-mail worms and/or viruses...yet I think in the history of OS X there has only been 1...and that was very specific to the point only a handful of users ever saw it.

The main problems in OS X actually are M$ related...like crappy MSIE and Office opening ports to check for updates or verify the serial number etc. yet leave those port(s) OPEN for any hacker to then gain access to the system.

It's almost like M$ has no clue about security....but would rather sacrifice that to protect against piracy and to spy on it's users so they can fill their demographics to then develop more software to get more of your money.

I had to use Windows 2.0 to run the Elixir software for designing print forms for Xerox 40xx laser printers. It was absolutely diabolical..... particularly when I got home and used a nice desktop on my miggie each evening that made Windows 2.0 look like crap.

Then again..... even Windows 2.0 was better than 30 x 6 amber screen character based terminals...... or punch cards..... or paper tape.... :D

But now I'm just beginning to show my age...... :(

Easily fixed. Don't use IE or Office. There are alternatives. That being said, I've been using Firefox for a while now, and I'm still not sure that I prefer it over IE.

Maybe not the right thread to ask but it's OS related anyway.
Any chances to have a 64 bits WolfMAME to play with A64/XP64 in a close future?

Probably not. Unless someone wants to buy an Athlon64 system, with Linux and WinXP for AMD64 for me, as well as a broadband net connection to upload it all with. :)

I would need to ask, but I think the latest macmame might be 64 bit.

If so, then performance would excel on G5s.

Using XCode, right? Based around GCC if I remember right, so that's perfectly possible.

64-bit x86 MAME builds are possible, but rather pointless without a 64-bit OS - Only Linux right now (I don't think Itaniums count as x86, really), until Microsoft gets off their asses and finish the x86-64 version of XP.

well there's already the beta to play with...
