mame .85 problem

Hi all,
Being an irregular gamer, I'm a tiny little bit frustrated with this new mame version [.85]

I used .83 with no problems. I downloaded .85 tonight but it wouldn't start any game. After some reading, I figured out I had to replace the ctrl folder with a new one. After doing this, my games still won't work with this new mame .85 version. It seems something is different with this version. Isn't there some document on the web that explains an irregular gamer how this new version does work?
Sorry to bother you gurus with my ignorance!

was it the windows version or command line version. If it's the CLI version, One thing i had to do was to get rid of the line that had "Standard" in mame.ini which would prevent any game from running in mame85. It gave the error message can't find Standard...

Is it just me, or did I really hear that ctrlr inis are now in XML format?
EDIT: Found this in the whatsnew for 0.85u1...
- Fixed loading of ctrlr files so that they actually take effect now.

And in 0.84u6...
- Added core-level support for the previously only Windows-supported
controller files. These files now have the extension .cfg instead
of .ini and are in the same format as the new XML-based .cfg files.
See the ctrlr directory for some examples. [Aaron Giles]
