Mame God Aaron Giles has added back the speed hacks for the Pacman games, but added it in a different way than it was before. He has added the hacked roms, what will this mean for Marp ?

Mame 0.85 looks good.

I'd go with removal of all pac *-fast splits, personally. No sense doubling them all up, even though only 3 games will have the speedup hack 'clones'.

Well, if the new hacked ROMs play the same as the fast splits, the scores should be moved over, shouldn't they?

Yes, move the pacman-fast, puckman-fast, and mspacman-fast to pacmanf, puckmanf and mspacmnf, respectively. But any other sped up hacks aren't available anymore (I'd presume no more are expected to be added). So perhaps archiving the rest is the best option, but I'll leave that to the pac-experts.

They dont play the same, read the whatsnew file. The ghosts are different.
In my opinion all previous fast scores should be archived. Cause this is true to the real arcade machines.

All the more reason to just archive all the *-fast splits then.

I don't agree with archiving.

Old -fast scores should be moved under new romsets. New romsets should be commented as "fast"... so we'll change just romname.

I don't know what the difference is with ghost behaviour. Which one is more difficult? My suggestion is that you can use either old -fast romset or new. "Old" romsets are easily found, because they are still same as parent rom. I Don't like the idea of removing or archiving good scores, only because something has changed in mame.

I don't personally have any -fast scores

To be true to what arcade Pacman was like, the only way is to remove the hacked source fast roms, and just use the real arcade roms. Go read the whatsnew file under that link, it tells you what the difference is.

P.S.
Nobody said previously that something is not emulated correct old -fast way. I don't think Aaron can judge himself how gameplay differs old vs new way.
These versions have been competed at marp for long time and have many good and worthwile recordings. Absolute NO to removing or archiving.

(Change romset mspac-fast => mspacmanf)

Example:

paperboy dip switch settings are not same as arcade default. Aaron changes paperboy default difficulty,and submits new romset. Fair to archive old scores?
Another example:
Phoenix sound is not emulated correct, Aaron makes changes into roms, not mame source, submits new romset and removes old...archive phoenixes. Fair?

I don't like to defend old scores, because some technical issue has changed.

No need for that kind of talk here. Stig has not told anything offensive to you in this thread. As for the change/removal etc. It is not decided yet.

Diabolik provided this text in another thread:
- Removed existing speedup cheat hack from Pacman/Ms Pac Man as
the way it was implemented in MAME is NOT how it was implemented
in the arcades. I have added the hacked software ROMs as three
separate sets for Puck Man, Pac Man, and Ms. Pac Man. These hacked
ROMs do not let you control the speed of the game with a button;
the game is always fast, and Pac Man is faster than the ghosts.
Also added a fake DIP switch to control the equivalent of the
hardware version of the speedup hack. It can be set to "Disabled",
"Enabled Always", or "Enabled with Button". Note that this hack
speeds up everyone, including the ghosts, as the original hack
did. [Aaron Giles]
OK, if I'm understanding correctly, the three new ROMs will play the same as the previous fast splits for those regular ROM's.

The fake DIP switches are something new entirely. They would result in gameplay not previously competed at MARP. In my opinion, if the ghosts and the player are both sped up, it's not worthy of having a split for. Others may disagree.

He also does not address what, if anything, they are going to do about the 18 or 19 clones with similar setups.
