Golden Era Game of the Week

See introduction here

The Game: Sinistar

romname: sinistar

Reward: $50 (usd)

Deadline for submission to MARP: June 18, 2004 2359 hours GMT

Further Bounties: $100 (usd) for the first player to exceed 158,055 on "sinistar" and 140,515 on "sinista1", and 171,470 on "sinista2" by September 15, 2004.

Comments: I never was a big fan of this one, but it does have cool sound. I played it quite a bit this week, as I needed a break from Zektor, but still never really got too close to defeating the Sinistar a second time. This is a really tough game.

I won't bother issuing a bounty for the arcade machine record, because I think we are at too great a disadvantage with a standard gamepad here. The real machine used a 49-way analog stick. I even bought a joystick with a trigger for this one, but didn't like it better than the gamepad.

I will put a bounty on the high scores at MARP for the parent and both clones, however we playing with a MAME version which documents the recorded speed also puts us at a disadvantage against the holder of all three of these scores.

Use WolfMAME .83

Sinistar! That must be the hardest Williams game ever made. Even the infamous 255 lives trick still exist. I think somebody could rack up that game to 200k w/o the trick. Sorry! I won't able to play this game, cuz I'm still on the holiday.

I think BBH probably could beat the record. It's not hard to beat 150k++. Unless if you could pass the 7-8 wave. I think that is the second worker wave.

I love the sound of Sinistar said, "Beware I live! Run Run you coward!" that scare away from those little kids back then in 80's. Heh! Heh!

Later,

this is going to be quite a challenge
dipswitch settings will be similar to joust
is it possible to turn the difficulty down and start a game , or are the factory settings restored every time ?
- want to be on an even playing field -

No dipswitches.

All settings are done in-game and reset when you start.

BTW, I just tried a game where I gave myself more ships. The warriors seem to sense that I have more and are much more aggressive. Interesting.

Thanks. I've gotten >100K on my first life a few times, only to lose the rest of my lives extremely fast and not beat my 165K score. :(

:? Forgot about the further bounty. That's what I get for not doing it right then and there. :) I still plan on submitting a decent Sinistar score, eventually...
