Roc'n Rope - leeching?

This was brought up in the Playbackability Forum:

Weehawk wrote:There is a spot on that level where you can stun a bunch of enemies in one spot and then grab the energizer to kill them. You have to die to repeat it, but since you get enough points to earn an extra life it could go on forever.

In all fairness to Sampras it actually looks like he's trying to finish the level each time after doing it, but doesn't.

If we wanted to continue competition on this game in a more traditional fashion, we could probably just set the dip switch to not grant the "repeat bonus".
It's not as clear cut as one might think. There's certainly nothing wrong with getting as many enemies as possible before proceeding...and of course if you happen to die before the level ends and start over, you'd do it again. But to do it deliberately over and over infinitely would constitute leeching in violation of Rule 2 and, in my opinion, spoil competition on the game. Who is to say what is deliberate?

I would lean toward requiring that the dip switch be set to not grant the "repeat bonus", meaning you'd get one extra life, and then no more - and letting the player do as he chooses with his limited men.

Discussion please.

I will email the players with the top two scores (who racked up lots of points doing this) on the game and invite them to participate.

Yeah... I remember this leeching issue was hot when we played in k2.. We never really made anything about it though.

Weehawks´s suggestion seems fine to me.

I think dip switch set to not grant the repeat bonus will solve all problem.

My email to Karol bounced.

I am repeating my email to Sampras.

I would very much like for them to have a chance to respond before settling this.

Otherwise, if there is no dissenting opinion soon we will implement the suggested Special Rule.

yes, set that rule. I think leeching is somthing to show off in the tips and tricks section not regular competition.

Still no decision.
However I try the game with no repeat bonus. See in upload section.

Seeing no dissenting opinion, I think we can go ahead and implement the rule.

Problem is, there is a lot of work to be done adjusting the existing scores, and I may not be able to watch all of them myself, so it may be some time.

OK, here are the four man scores for all the submissions on the parent ROMset:

1 karol = 220,690
2 sampras = 157,580
3 mccorn = 173,720
4 angry = 187,100
5 davil = 222,930
6 innuendo = 129,150
7 phil = 100,950
8 timmykins = 204,600
9 alex = 165,720
10 jlr-df = 154,080
11 frankie = 148,830
12 pat garrique = 144,840
13 riccardo cable = 86,680
14 ad sakuragi = advertised 63,400

I never got the last one to play back, but even at it's advertised score it is in last place.

If an editor would be so kind as to edit the scores and put in a Special Rule requiring that the "repeat bonus" dipswitch be set off on all recordings.
