Is there a tactic or a strategy for this game or is it purely random?

Quite honestly, in my run at it, there seemed to be purely random elements in certain situations. As you've probably noticed, you can induce the enemy ships to go to one side or the other by stationing your ship accordingly. However, it becomes a problem when the enemy ships advance towards you vertically. If you find anything beyond this, let us in on it!
