I don't doubt the validity of the recording, but if I'm not able to play
it back on my computer regardless of which version and how I tweak
it, doesn't that defeat the very purpose of the site?

That's what I've gotten out of this thread so far - that regardless of
what I do, I won't be able to play it back.

There is a thread about this issue in the regulation play forum already.

this is a mame bug, i proposed that recordings with this bug be banished from the site for this very issue, and only allow mame62 and below recordings for these playback buggy games (listed in the sticky of this forum). But that was shot down since most people that happened to record with the buggy mame would rather keep their (unplaybackable by half of the public with the same config) scores than help everyone to playback their recordings. This is what leaderboard envy can do, but whatever, at least someone can play these recordings back to verify them. I apologize deeply that you, chris, can't playback this particular recording, if you want to play it back just ask the person who made it to please record again in a mame version 62 and below...

Chris, there are probably 20 million computers in your area running windows XP. Some of those are also probably running on a p4 processor. Try to see if you know anyone with this setup and see if you can play the inp back on their computer. Maybe sometime this year I will make a new inp in mame32v61 or something. However it won't be anytime soon.
