right. the joke pokes fun at what MAME does, at who its author
(really) is, and in particualr, its relation to other emulators in
the emulation community, particularly with MAME's tendency
to 'amalgamate' games that other emulators used to be the sole source
to play on.

if you've read Lord of the Rings, you know why...

This makes more sense if you make references to Stephen R. Donaldson
and/or Thomas Covenant than if you make LOTR references...

uh, no. those works are derivative of Tolkien, as is most modern-day
fantasy. i'm really amazed how many people here obviously haven't
read the books. i thought they would be obvious requisites for
fantasy geeks (since unless you feel like reading middle english
poetry, they were the first modern fantasy), but it seems like my
presumption is just making me look more and more ignorant.

the quote on Sauron's One Ring, for what it's worth is: "One Ring to
rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and
in the darkness bind them", but if you haven't read the books, you
won't get the subtleties beyond that. anyway, it seems only Angelo
has actually read the books, so I guess no-one is really going to get
why MAME wearing the One Ring is a very clever comment.

an apology to all those i've offended along the way. i really did
think more people had read LOTR and were just being obstinate.

Ummm... no. The bad assumption was that no one who had ever read the
books could possibly look at at a mame logo with a ring around it and
NOT think "Aaah, the one ring of Sauron, who attempted to bring
elves, dwarves and humans under his dominion, of course that's an
analogy of MAME bringing games from Neo-Geo, CPS2 etc. How clever!"

Not everyone thinks the same. Doesn't mean you have to throw insults
around.

I still think the analogy to the white gold ring in the Chronicles Of
Thomas Covenant is better... rather than bringing all these things
under an evil power's dominion, just an amalgamation of things into
one more powerful force.

Hmm...it seems that LOTR is back in fashion .Grief....

I`ll quote a verse from a UK indie band , from 1986-ish, when LOTR
books seemed to be quite popular . And strangely , after all these
years , yet popular again.

Here goes...

" Mention the Lord of The Rings just once more
and I`ll more than likely kill you...

More Cock , more cock , Michael Moorcock you fervently moan . Is this
a Wok that you`ve shoved down my throat , or are you just pleased to
see me ?

Brian Moores' head looks uncannily like London Planeterium "....

( Half-man Half Biscuit , " Dickie Davis Eyes " , circa 1986 )

Maybe Ben Jos would have... if he read this board with any
regularity.

Only one in the modern fantasy had write his books before Tolkien.
Howard is great but I prefere JRR Tolkien. For the ring on mame.net,
its a gold ring. So its The One, not the marry ring of Thomas
Covenant...

Very unfunny was the "ending" of the movie, like watching Dallas or
something. You would think that 3 hours is long enough time to have
even some kind of ending. Star Wars at least was a trilogy with
independent movies. How can I wait for a year for next "episode"?
Easily, it was such a crap movie: Too childish for adults, too
violent for children, no decent plot! and characters were not
interesting enough. Maybe book is a classic, but movie suckfs.

Then again there is allways new MAME-beta release to wait for, you
suckers
