I for my part find PAC's Galaga score freaking AWESOME

Pac used Difficulty: Rank D [Hardest] to my knowledge the hardest settings for Galaga.
He played the game for over 11 hours straight and died only 3 times
Anyone that ever played a classic shmup on tournament settings for over let's say 7 hours knows what that means

I don't really like if ppl compare Gyruss with Galaga both games are similar sure patternable games but still completely different.

Gyruss has this annoying asteroids and the laser beam generators that adds randomness to the game.
Galaga might not have such things like asteroids/laser beam generators but the gamer itself will *create* lot's un-patternable situations during a long run with missed enemies joystick movements etc... completely different games imo.

i can only achieve about 200, 000 with 3 ships at default mame settings

i think pacwhiz's Galaxian 1.76 million at 5 hours 41 minutes is freakin' awesome
i let the aforementioned PAC .inp of Galaga play thru last night...normal speed 100%
no speed thru moments feel asleep get up watch some more, do some housework , watch some more
6pm 'til before 6Am closer to 12hours

First of all sorry for the late reply have not even noticed until today that you posted again lol

About Tempest have never played it the only thing I know about the game is that it uses a spinner
Galaga shares some things like double shoot/Double ship and bonus stages with Gyruss the rest apples and oranges like you said.

For Pacwhiz's Galaxian WR true awesome I agree but PAC's Galaga WR is on the same level.
After pushing the fire button constantly for over 11 hour I bet he was happy that he could stop after 20M.
I think he used a keyboard to play but still 11 hours can be a damn long time on a game like Galaga.

Watched until he lost his first life at 3hours 25 min at 5,6M or so it's almost the same time I played for my 1 life Gyruss Record 3 hours 20.

I for my part still prefer 1 life attempts no need to play a game for over 11 hours waaay too long for my taste.

The only thing I didn't like is the descriptrion that he used, the line no autofire no cheats was really not needed since on marp autofire and cheats are forbidden anyway.... I would have rather liked to see a more detailed score breakdown

That could have been me. On Don Hodges site there's a complete breakdown on the 'bug' for Galaga stage 256/0 and the reasons why some difficulty settings make level 256/0 possible to complete and what the programmer should have done to 'avoid' the bug from happening:

He also has interesting write-ups on the Pacman stage 256/0 bug, the Defender bonus life frenzy between 990,000 and 1,000,000, when extra lives are set to every 10k, and various other write-ups. Well worth a read.
