Is the best way to run mame straight from dos or use the run window in windows? i tried exiting windows completly and running mame from dos but it wont let me. it says something about missing some kind of zip file. i know its not the rom because it works fine from the run window. the main reason im trying to do this is because me recordings keep getting delted because they say my FR drops too much. how can i keep it about 54fps? i tried turning off the sound but that did nothing. i have a pent 3, 450mzh, 128 ram.

I definitely find running in pure DOS faster than running in a DOS
box from within Windows. Another way to increase speed is by using a
different frame skip (F8 or F9 keys while playing a game).

The file you are refering to that you are missing might be cwsdpmi,
or something similar to that. It's a file you need while running
mame in pure DOS and can be picked up at mame.net in the downloads
section.

On another note, setting up sound support in DOS can be a bit of a
pain too! But let's hope you don't have to deal with that.

Richy: try using autoframe skip with your windows mame, this may
eliminate the slowdown for yah.

However, adding Frame Skip won't fix your problems if your recordings
are getting deleted for your FR dropping, because it will lower your
frame rate. Your best bet is either to run without sound (which is
what I do) or to run your game on a friend's computer when you want
to record a tournament recording.

It's not that he was lowering the skip rate, the Frame Rate of the
recordings seemed to be too low. Autoframeskip WILL increase the
framerate and bring it as close to 100 as possible, and probably
increase the frame skip rate of a slower computer.

Turning off sound is a great idea too but not all games are faster
with sound off, pc10 comes to mind.
