clearly it doesn't get more difficult as you do it, but it's not a cake walk to back track either, you can lose lives doing it, but you can gain them right back. It's a tough call, to determine if this can be done infinitley or not. If it can be done infinitively, back-tracking should be banned.

Well, the more you get bonus items, the higher the rank increases, especially if you get the barrier. It probably decreases a bit if you die, but if you avoid getting any barriers at all, it'd probably be much easier to do. It's bad enough that there is no time limit (the CPU player is usually too dumb to beat you to the finish), and that the game loops infinitely.
