Is it me or has the sound quality in MAME gotten worse. The sound in Win36b15 was ok but in all the versions beyond that I get the occasional 'cracks' in the sound when playing the games. I get this no matter what sound options I set, although I do tend to use the recommended MIDAS option for this Win95 (DOS disabled) machine.

MAME Sound Quality From Win36 Final Onwards
Moderator: Chad
I'm using .36 MAME32 final, and not having any problems. But the
official site says they are having some sound issues under Win2000.
Would you happen to be using it? Also, for best settings, I think the
recommendation is currently DirectSound.

The machine is Windows95. I changed to the DirectSound option as
recommended but the sound didn't improve - then I ticked the FM
Synthesis option and the sound improved slightly although it's still
not perfect.

I have the same problem. Anytime I use a version of MAME without
SEAL sound which includes any version of MAME beyond 36b15, I get
cracking sounds. The problem is I really, really want to play
Looping, and I can't play it on the earlier version. Help! Midas
sound sucks! Its SEAL that's the good stuff. Maybe MAME should
learn a lesson, if it ain't broke...

Yup, Win36b15 was the last version with no crackly sounds. The
operating system and CPU power makes absolutely no difference at all,
I've used MAME on them all. Actually even in tgmame35 with a non-
Seal setup, I sometimes get echo effects and after escaping from a
game I get the last second of sound replaying, weird.
<p>
In the MAME support pages they do mention that if you get sound
breakup, then you should pause the game for a second or two then
unpause. But of course you can't do that when recording for MARP
because pausing is illegal!

Pausing IS possible with any mame, AlT-TAB with windows to put the
current window in the background, SIGTSP with unix... it's just that
if you pause with a tournament mame it'll be recorded in the inp, so
it can be detected.

Forgive me, I meant that using the regular pause key isn't possible
(at least as far as I can tell... might only be 37b9tg2).
