wb3 - Wonder Boy 3 - archived and not

Post by destructor »

I see that some wb3 scores are archived:
http://marp.retrogames.com/r/*wb3
and some not:
http://marp.retrogames.com/r/wb3

I playback one moment ago my *wb3 recording on new romset wb3 and all works fine.
Maybe *wb3 and wb3 are the same game, only name was changed because new clones were added? Maybe *wb3 should be not archived and merged with wb3?

I use audit option in old wolf version and in new and no errors for *wb3 and wb3 on one romset.

None of them, except for the bootleg version, would have worked at all before the System 16 encryption was cracked. I would not be surprised if various versions have been shuffled about or something.

No, after researching this a bit, *wb3 was archived and wb31 came into its place. It is the original wb3 set that was called SET 1. Not sure why they were archived. If desired, I can merge *wb3 back into wb31. This set was also in a tourney back in May 2004.

You'll note that wb3, wb32, wb33, wb34 all came out on or after m88 and *wb3 has recording prior to m88.

For me it's strange because current set1 (wb31) require:

I think when *wb3 and wb3 are different versions then playback *wb3 using new wb3 romset should not work. But it works perfectly.

For me it's a bit not logic that when you want playback old wb31 (*wb3) you must use current wb3 romset.

EDIT
I found info:
  • 0.88u4: Chris Hardy added clone Wonder Boy III - Monster Lair (System 16A, 317-0084). Renamed (wb3) to (wb3b) and clones (wb3a) to (wb3ba), (wb3b) to (wb3bb) and (wb3bl) to (wb3bbl).
    0.92: Renamed (wb3b) to (wb3), (wb3a) to (wb31), (wb3ba) to (wb33), (wb3bb) to (wb32) and (wb3bbl) to (wb3bbl).
Then *wb3 IS wb3. I think we should (must) merge *wb3 with wb3.

wb31 is old wb3a added in version 88u4 - Wonder Boy III - Monster Lair (System 16A, 317-0084).

Very convincing analysis! I'll merge *wb3 into wb3...
