K5 Qualifying Round

Post by BBH »

And so it begins!

Image

Game - Shock Troopers (shocktro)
Qualifying Score - 300,000
Duration of Round - August 20th 2006 00:00 GMT - August 29th 2006 23:59 GMT

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who knows me at all. :) I've been wanting to use Shock Troopers in a tournament for FOREVER, but always ended up seeing it get voted down in the regular MARP tournaments. Finally I'm free to abuse my power and force it into a tournament! But instead of saving it for the finals or something like that, it's the qualifier instead so everyone can enjoy it.

To officially qualify for K5, all you have to do is beat the game's default high score of 300,000. That might sound like a relatively high score, but it's really not. After a play or two, anyone can beat that score within one minute or so. Of course, players are still encouraged to try their hardest and go for the highest score possible!

If you're looking for gameplay info and tips, try my old webpage, which hasn't been updated in years but still has a decent amount of information. You can also hop onto #marp and ask me anything, if I'm around at the time then I'll gladly chat with anyone about my favorite game :D

NOTE: in wolf106 the game tends to give an error message when exiting after playing back a recording. This seems to be "normal" and playback isn't affected at all, so it does still work. You're free to use wolf101 instead if you're scared of having the error message screw something up, although it shouldn't. Also, since this is a Neo-Geo game, make sure you're playing on the default bios and that you don't have any memcard.000 files in your memcard directory (to be on the safe side, delete your memcard directory or make a read-protected empty file called "memcard" to keep it from coming back). Presence of a memcard.000 file could cause playback problems for those trying to play it back without the file.

NOTE #2: Partly due to my laziness, we don't have any dedicated K5 entries in the MARP database yet. Whoops. For the time being, just upload your recordings to "shocktro". If you already have a recording on MARP with a higher score that you don't want to delete, we'll permit uploads as attachments in this thread.

Well, I just proved that.

Think I'll play Omega Race for 12 more days, thanks.

GHEMANT, your recording was done on Japanese bios, I know you always play on that but please use the default (Europe MVS Ver. 2 / -bios 0) for the tournament, thanks :)

Zhorik reminded me of a thread I forgot to link in the original post. This thread over on the Neo-Geo forums has a lot of other in-depth gameplay information that I've shared and hadn't put on my site yet.

MARP's been down at least twice tonight, so... everyone is free to keep uploading by forum attachment instead. I don't think we'll make a big deal over anyone who uploads by forum attachment even when MARP is up for that matter, because it's only the qualifying round, we can be relatively loose with the rules ;D

First post will be continually updated with the players who have qualified.

Gemant's latest upload to MARP has the .wlf file included (and worked fine with default bios, thanks!)

edit: Udirnel, we'll accept this recording since it plays back fine of course, but please make sure to include the .wlf file in the future :)

just for fun, here's a "sample play" of mine, since I can't even play back my old scores on MARP on Windows XP, haha... :(

I could have done better than this but I'm really rusty.

This is why I like the Knockout tourny-I get to obsessively play games I might not have given much time to otherwise.

This game is very fun! Its a shame to see it wasted in the qualifying round, though.

friendly advice: remember that the second button lets you roll to dodge bullets that are coming at you. :)

but see, this way everyone gets to enjoy it in the qualifying round! (guess it could have been used in the first elimination round too, though...)
