Not MAME related - Install/uninstall problems

Somewhere for the annoying and/or off-topic threads to go. Feel free to post about whatever, but abuse will still be dealt with, and possibly with more force. Especially pac-porno. ;)

There is one very simple technique to automatically block these. Edit the "hosts" file in your /windows/system32/drivers/etc folder and point every popup add URL back to 127.0.0.1. Then, every attempt at displaying an add will attempt to locate it on your local machine and fail immediately.

It also greatly increases the speed of your net surfing as you're not waiting forever for adds to be displayed. You'll just get page not found messages where the adds would have been. :D

Some sites are trying to prevent you from using this technique but then I don't bother visiting those sites anymore.

Alternately, go here for a file that includes most of the sites you'll want to block already pre-loaded into a Hosts file for you.

Security Center will tell you what it's using for Antivirus and Firewall by expanding each option.

Of course, if Windows thinks your AV is even a little bit out of date, it will bitch and whine worse than kiddies who don't have KOF2003 ROMs. :)

that is very nice to know, thanks! but i wouldn't call it simple. have to manually add each ip from an ad that comes up? seems rather tedious, since most ads are on rotating ip addies... but the starting host file does help.

QRS are you talking about the information bar that pops up when a popup is blocked? If so you can turn this off in Pop-up Blocker Settings...

Great tip about the ad-blocking Patwos, I will try that one.
