Ideas for steering wheels

Post by lippsman »

Looking for a good wheel for driving games. All of the ones in the stores I've looked at, seem only to go around a couple of times before stopping. Didn't the arcade wheels keep spining around. Would this make a difference in game play.

Thanks

Some did...some didn't. Pole Position's steering wheel certainly was unlimited cuz for that tight Centipede sign turn I would spin that wheel through the turn then stop it to get "out" of it.

For later racing games, some got more realistic with the control like it actually turned the wheel...so was limited in how far you could turn it. I think the game would physically allow you to keep turning that wheel...but it had no affect beyond a certain point where the wheels were "hard-over".

Racing games like Hang-On definitely fall into this where you steered by leaning....although I think there were a few upright steering type models also.

I thought Outrun's steering was limited also...but can't really remember. hehe

The later F-1 type games definitely were limited even in the steering wheel to better simulate true racing.

I think even the early Turbo game had limited steering cuz I remember only being able to turn the wheel only about 150 degrees each way from it's "center" point.

Outrun steering was limited, as at most games. Pole Position was not.

All "non limited" games I can think of are:
Pole Position I/II
A.P.B.
Sprint series?

Yes, I do remember as the years went on, the wheels were a bit more real life. But, what steering wheel do you recommend for purchase? What wheel do you use for MAME. It seems an F-1 type of wheel would be tough to use for something as Pole Position or Super Sprint.

That's a good idea Tar. I tried using my new toy (Shameless Plug here) Tornado spinner. But just wanted the arcade feel of a wheel. Oh and a gas pedal. It appears that the wheels on the market just don't interface well with MAME games, from the lack of responses I recieved.

Thanks

Today I plug in and configure Saitek Wheel - R100 USB for Pole Position. But playing with this wheel on MAME is hard.
About install procedure:
1. download special software from Saitek site
2. set wheel as mouse x axis
3. set button1 on wheel as gas
4. set button2 as ... (Pole Position) gear change

I have better results with tornado spinner. Good idea is made wheel for tornado spinner

I actually have an original Outrun steering wheel in my possession.
Not thats it's much use to me. It's just one of many things that I procured during the time.....

Allen keys are no match for a Swiss Army Knife......

Heh.....
