Beatmania Scoring

Post by CherryMay »

It's quite apparant that the in-game scoring for the beatmania games is a little messed up.

From 1st-3rd Mix and DCT at least (I've not played 4th Mix and above), the game's scoring works out a percentage of 100,000 possible points for every song, no matter what the difficulty of the song is.

For a hypothetical example, let's say there was a song with a difficulty level of 1, that only had 40 notes in it, and you got a 'Great' timing on all 40 notes.
You'd get 100,000 points, plus even more points for a 'perfect bonus'.

Now let's say you chose a song with the maximum difficulty, which contained 400 very trickily timed notes to a very fast song. You got a 'Great' timing on 399 of those notes, and one 'Good'.
You'd only get approx. 99,900 points, for almost perfecting a song which requires much more skill.

All in all, I think there should be some special rule, where you add a certain amount of points to your total depending on the difficulty of the songs you have chosen.

An example would be adding 10,000 points for beating a 1 star song, 20,000 for beating a 2 star song, etc.

And, on the topic, many of the beatmania games need to be split-- Beatmania DCT for example has several 'Monkey Live' courses as well as a 'Hard Mode', each having many differences in notes, score and difficulty to the regular mode.

I still think we should just use EX scoring for all modes (2 points for each just great, 1 point for each great, add them together).

1st Mix doesn't have just greats (and neither does 5th mix (maybe 2nd/3rd too?) in normal mode I don't think, nice job Konami, since 4th does), so it could either just be 1 point for each great and that's it, or 2 points for each great and 1 point for each good.

I agree with that- there's much less confusion involved there.

Wait... I've just seen a problem again.

The original beatmania does not show how many greats/goods/etc you got. After a stage, it only shows your stage score.

It wouldn't be too difficult to manually count them, since none of the songs are so difficult that the greats/good/etc flash by too fast. It's the only version I believe that doesn't anyhow.

I don't know if 1st Mix really NEEDS Expert scoring compared to the rest. It's not like there's that many songs to choose from, and on the last two stages the timing on all the songs are pretty messed up.

I wanted to try to compete on the Beatmanias but I have such shitty luck with USB converters so fuck this. I'll stick to IIDX.

My USB converter doesn't have trouble with the buttons at all, but on fast consecutive scratches, it won't register all the time.
