How you map buttons?

Post by The TJT »

Question: How do you map buttons at games which include joystick and 2 buttons right of the stick.

Example: Scramble, Phoenix, Shinobi, Asteroids

Now I think I put allways fire button right, and thrust/bomb/shield/jump buttons left.

I just came from Game on exhibition at Helsinki, I thought all these games had buttons exactly other way, at mame cabinets there.
...I was thinking...Maybe I lost track and do it "wrong" now...or maybe they were clueless? I could allways check the original button order at ebay etc...but I ask anyway. How you do it?

I always see jump/bomb button on right side in arcade or home console games. Except for games made by some (all ?) french companies who didn't know make a game :)

Joy in left hand, fire button to the right followed by the bomb/jump button etc to the far right. That´s my fav setup for all games with two buttons.

btw, Asteroids had a different set up if I remember correctly. With no joy at all, but A LOT of buttons :P

In Space Invaders, Phoenix, and similar games -left, right and a shoot- I use the 'up arrow' (or 'down arrow') to shoot. (All controlled with one hand)

For the rest I use the keys Z, X, C,... with the left hand (that depends on the game) and the arrows with the other.

If the game has 5 buttons -ex: MK II-, I use numeric block (numbers 1,3,5,7 and 9)
If the game has 6 buttons -ex: Super SF II Turbo-, I use Z,X,C and A,S,D or numeric block (numbers 1-6).
