" Ask the Guru ".....hmm ok, I'll ask MARP-ers too

Post by AL »

Guys , I've got a query .

Theres a gaming programme broadcast from England on SKY ONE called ' Gamezville' . It's pretty good . They review all consoles , have lots of features etc..etc .

But they have a section called 'Ask the Guru' . Basically it's people asking for cheats , and the mighty Guru complies ( he is actually very good ), but recently the Mighty One was asked which arcade game was the first to use 'Force Feedback' . He said it was 'Hard Drivin' , 1988 . I disagree . I reckon it was Outrun , 1986 . Mind you , not all machines had this feature , but some did , therefore Outrun is the correct answer , is it not ?

I'm assuming 'Force Feedback' is the shaky steering wheel thing .

Any comments anyone ? Is the Guru wrong ? Is AL wrong ? Are we both wrong ? Why all the questions , you ask ?

Cheers ,

AL

If they introduced Outrun shaky version same time original...

I've only played outrun-shaky :D at Funspot, little hard in the beginning to get used to. But it was really like driving myself! (hahaha)

You're right, I play Out Run DX with force feedback wheel in arcade. Hard Drivin had the first Contact Key and... a... I don't know the english word for ' arbre a came ', I presume Shaft, in arcade.

hmm...didn't the Discs of Tron environmental cabinet system have an intensor chair? I thought it did but maybe not remembering correctly. I only saw you once but didn't play it cuz it was like $1 or $2 to play.

Given they also had a standup I only played that.

I remember hype about it saying when you got hit you would get shaken or something along those lines.

Also, didn't euduro racer also have force feedback?

I guess that came out just after Outrun. Both of those are Sega games right?

Well thanks for that guys . I can't speak for Discs of Tron , because I never seen/heard of it , so can't comment .

I've e-mailed 'The Guru '....no response , yet . Hell if I'm right and The Guru is shamed , I might make it onto the telly....

Actually Rick , Enduro Racer came out before Outrun . Not too sure if it had Force Feedback .

Taking a tangent to the left , I am being very careful not to mention sport....just in case Barry is reading .Oh....doh!

Now where are all the sarcastic Aussie jibes ???

Cheers ,

AL

Hmm I´m not an expert on this, but I don´t think you can really call Outruns shaky thingies Force feedback. Maybe the idea was born then, but it was just shaking, and not "inteligent" shaking so to speak :P

Just my opinion about the definition of Force feedback, and please kick my ass if you don´t agree heeh ;)

That's not really any different versus modern PSX or PS2 force feedback in games.

In outrun, when you got off the road it would shake the wheel..or if you crashed.

I'm not sure what you mean by "intelligent" force feedback. Even most games today that support force feedback aren't really anymore intelligent than what Outrun was. Some have added varying intensities though based on aspects of the game like promixity to what triggers the feedback or force of the impact from the enemy etc. That's only marginally more intelligent than what Outrun had.

A simple shake == not intelligent.

Shaking or steering that reacts exatcly to the envoirement/crashes/different speed/bends etc == Intelligent.

Like I said that is my defenition of Force feedback. Not simple shaking. Outrun might have been the father of it, but not the "real thing" if you ask me.

And before we are getting into this too deep, I need no explanation how Force feedback works, or how it is programed, what trigger it etc. I know that already. :P

For that you would need an entire intensor body suit you wear when playing. With the possibility of shocking you in the balls so you get to experience the true pain of a crash. hehe

can you give an example of a game that has what you are terming "intelligent" force feedback?

The closest thing I can think of would be something like "The Chair" that was on that game show...that had firethrowers and liquid nitrogen chillers to alter the temperature of the chamber the person was in from -20C to +40C and beyond in a matter of a minute or so....throws water of varying temperatures on them, shocks them in one of many possible places like legs, feet, arms, hands, back, neck... has the shaking functions too.

Tie all of that in with a video game then you have what I would truly call intelligent feedback where you have several different modes and choices to give feedback to the player based on what happens in the game.

Hi,
I may be way off but I think I think there is a difference between the two.
Outrun would rumble but Hard Drivin' would push in the oposite direction.
Probably wrong though, it was a while ago.
I thought Enduro Racer was Nintendo.
