Aha! I just figured out what's causing it.
In my mame.ini, the audio sample rate is set to 48000. For some reason the playback dies if it's set to anything else, so bung -sr 48000 onto the end of the command line and it should work.
I've just changed my rate back to the default, that'll fix future inps.

Looks like championship sprint has more probs not necesarily related to sound

Hmm... well for me csprint does die, but not until the highscore entry (didn't notice before uploading - when testing it I cancelled the playback right after it added up my score). This is using a clean directory containing nothing but wolfmame74u1 and an ini that defines my ROM and INP directories.
I doubt that it is related to my settings like with ssprint. I restored the defaults shortly before recording, and only set the following:
mouse 1
joystick 1
cheat 0
skip_disclaimer 1
skip_gameinfo 1
Well, all I can say is 'bah!'. I'll try playing without sound next time. That probably won't be for a short while, though. I've jumped out of my Sprint phase and into a Smash TV one - I'm absolutely determined to get through it in one credit. I've had plenty of practice on the SNES version (which is, admittedly, a helluva lot easier)
On a possibly relevant note, I'm running on Win98 SE.

Didn't see that last post 'til now. My post took around half-an-hour to write thanks to numerous distractions
When I playback I don't use throttle at all. I prefer to run through it slowly to look for errors in my technique (plenty of those, I'm afraid). Maybe thats why it worked for me.
*gets idea* *plays it back again*
Well. I can successfully crash it by touching the throttle/frameskip at any time, but changes made at the start don't seem to cause any problems. It still dies anyway at the highscore entry, though... *shrug*
(edit deleted for containing a load of waffle -Spoo)

ok, i was dumb on this one, this is a known issue with some games (mostly light gun games), analogue controlls and frameskipping. Playsback fine as long as you use frameskip=0, throttling is ok, if you use autofs even though it may look like it's using fs=0 it's NOT. confirmed by me (even though it doesn't enter initials :)
