Discussion: Authority to Start Polls
Moderators: mahlemiut, seymour, QRS
You can't 'presume' what the right decision is though. Almost invariably, your 'right' choice will be another mans 'wrong' one.
A right decision is only what any particular person percieves a right decision to be.
I've started 2 polls. both, it turns out, have been discussed before. However, in my opinion, both were valid in as much that, in MY OPINION they weren't 'satisfactorily' concluded last time.
Just because person A doesn't agree with the current state of any particular rule or game should negate that person's right to either post a poll or indeed put forward a request for a poll. in the latter case, is is 'right' to let an editor that may or may not know everything decide whether or not that poll should take place? Or maybe to decide that the points put forward in the preceeding discussion warrant a new rule without a poll? Ludicrous.
I put a poll for banning NVram in hyperspt. Nothing's happened despite an overwhelming vote to ban. A vote that, in some quarters, has prompted less than 'appealing' reactions. Why even discuss banning polls if they are not going to be acted upon? I admit I'm not too familiar with the voting rules and regs, but even though I didn't close the poll surely an as overwhelmingly one sided result should stand/happen?
Through the archives on here (yeah im on about hyperspt agaiiin!) there are several posts which refer to a small group of players that play the game and this may be argued that ONLY these players should be eligible to vote. It's almost given that if this was the case then the poll I did would have resulted in NVram being allowed for this game.
But that, at the moment, isn't the rules.
I just feel that there is an adequate system in place if the system's results are acted upon. Surely people who actually play the game should be allowed to initiate a (rule deciding) poll, editor or not?
I'll also point out that in the other poll I started as a non editor, yes, there were some fatuos choices. With hindsight they wouldn't have been included in the original poll.
Let's hope editor-only rule-defining polls are never plagued by the 'shit, I didn't think of that option; what a good idea' syndrome like the arkanoid2 one of mine.
Discuss.

I would actually agree with that Novice if and only if all 8 editors were always in contact with the site via at least this forum.Novice wrote:At first, I wanted to say what Francois said.
but now,I think "Ban vote from non-editor" seemed much better idea.
require 6 votes out of 8 (3/8 is higher than 33.3%) to change rule.
and discussion before poll was by enough knowledge men.
There could be(if not one already) a forum set up that only the editors can see where they have these polls and vote on it...then report the results in the regulation forum for all to see.
I'm guessing though only about half the editors check the site regularly though. You don't want a poll where only 4 of the editors vote. You likely would need a 6 out of 8 voting to satisfy a quorum for the vote to be valid(based on 2/3rd being present for most organizations for quorum status)
In doing that, it puts too much burden on the editors as they feel it's their duty to check regularly etc. for potential votes. Some of them do that but not others. It also demands of them to read up on all the discussion and get to know the game more by watching a couple inps or playing it themselves before voting. I think for the most part most members that participate in these forums regularly and vote in polls are the members that care the most anyway....so should take care by discussing and/or reading the discussion before making a final opinion on it and voting.
That seems to be a lot to ask of an editor on a regular basis. I think the reason MARP has 8 editors to start with is so the "tasks" are divided up among them so no 1 editor has all that much to do. A few editors here actually do almost all the editor tasks.
While I could see some advantages to letting the editors make all these decisions, democracy is sort of a main theme at MARP, in fact MARP's first rule states:
1. MARP is a self-regulating community. It is expected that all players will behave honorably as a part of this community, contributing not only to the leaderboard but to the discussions regarding the community as well. Everyone has a say at MARP, whether you're 1st on the leaderboard or 101st, and whether you've been at MARP for four years or for forty seconds.
Having the editors do all the voting might be more palatable if the membership at least voted to elect the editors, but we don't.
I don't think such a drastic change in philosophy is warranted, but if a poll on the issue is started perhaps that could be one of the options available.

I see. now I understand why he made that complain.Macmame cheater wrote: I have a goal to reach 20,000 by the end of September. It's a tough goal. I likely will have to play some games and submit scores that I can't even place in the top 3 on. As you likely have noticed by now for the most part I only submit scores that at least at the time of submission are a top 3 score. I still have a handful of pacman type games to achieve scores for...hehe...although it takes time to play those.
sweet spot beats his "IMPROTANT LB-points". blah.
He scream like crazy because just protect his LB-score.

Barry, it seems you can only view this entire thread by hitting reply then looking at the topic review below the submit post form....or by actually replying then you see the thread ok for that 1 page after submitting.
In the topic review the thread appears correctly with all post showing...and only showing once.
Through the main view I only see 2 pages of posts and none since then.
We should lock this thread I think and continue it elsewhere so we can't possibly screw things up more here in this thread where it might start affecting other threads or parts of the forums.

Editors, it's time to BAN Novice from here. Look at the crap above where he renames me for a quote to "macmame cheater".Novice wrote:I see. now I understand why he made that complain.

Why on earth do you continue to show total disrespect for me Novice?
I use macmame cuz I have a mac...and play on a mac. If I had a PC that was faster I would use the PC to play. Nothing about that makes me a cheater. To keep calling me a cheater and all the other BS you throw at me I think Novice has violated Rule #1 at MARP time and time again even after being warned by others in the past.
MARP doesn't need members like Novice that show total disrespect toward others. Why haven't the editors/moderators done anything to stop him from treating others with disrespect?
wtf is this new "complain" you mention above? Are you still going back and referring to the Outrun and Cameltry BS you put all of us through?
Enough is enough ok?!? Editors, we have asked him to stop this BS at least 5-6 times. He sees he can keep doing it cuz all he gets is a little tiny slap on the wrist if even that. it's obvious the editors just telling him to stop isn't going to stop him. Further action needs to be considered.
Notice how peaceful these forums were the past 3-4 months while Novice wasn't around. Now he returns and look at it.
Why don't you pick on someone else for a change?..or better yet, don't pick on anyone here and actually act like a human and show respect toward others.

I'm looking at the recent posts by clicking on the link to the last poster in the thread from the thread list in the General forum. Then I click on "Find all posts by this author" and then on the thread as shown in that list.LN2 wrote:Barry, it seems you can only view this entire thread by hitting reply then looking at the topic review below the submit post form....or by actually replying then you see the thread ok for that 1 page after submitting.
That shows the page that that post (the most recent one) is on.
I agree with Rick this thread ought to be locked and another started. Or are we ready for an editor to start a poll on the issue?
