Arkanoid with a mouse :/

Post by dskys »

Anyone got any tips on how to configure the control input to make this barely playable with a mouse?

yeah, just hit TAB to get the mame config settings, then select Analog Settings.

In there notice the track x sensitivity....adjust that to a percentage through trial and error so when you play your mouse movement to make the vaus movement back and forth seems natural to you.

Then you are set to play it!

Nahh that doesn´t help! Playing with a mouse compared to a spinner still sucks j/k :)

Seriously, Rick has stated the path. Trial and error is the way here... To make it as close to to arcade feeling as possible. I hate using the mouse though.

Same in driving games like Pole P. I need the proper arcade controller! :)
Until then the scores will suck for me...

Given you have played the arkanoids to completion QRS you must not be having that hard of a time controlling it.

Remember that I had 6 months to train in deca 2002 :) Anyway, my scores using a mouse is crap compared to what I can do with a spinner.

I have managed to finish it with a mouse, but still I have not come near the control of the arcade spinner. Most of my deaths are due to the controlls.

Arkanoid is not a hard game to finish with a spinner. I´m quite satisfied that I could do it a few times with a mouse though.

I need to get a better encoder wheel to my spinner (must be more sensitive) I´ll hope to get some better scores in then :)

Don't get me wrong..I totaly understand what you mean. I could complete Arkanoid in the arcade as well...but haven't in MAME....although can't say I have given it a real effort.

I agree though that with a spinner you had the precise control for subtle moves and the power to move quickly as well. With a mouse you have to sort of compromise...can't have both totally.

My problem is that I hate using a mouse! Its the same for games in mame that used a rotary joystick on the arcades. Like Ikari Warriors etc. I can learn to controll the game ok, but I never feel totally 'safe' so to speak.. I even use a pad for Outrun in Mame and that tells you all something :) A mouse should be better for 99% of the players that are used to a wheel I guess.

I think what makes it worse is that analog input overflow issue. I wish they would fix that.

I think if they did then control with mouse as an analog controller would be as good as arcade games....cuz then you don't have to worry about moving the mouse too fast where you get that jitter crap and little to no motion or actually have it jitter and go the opposite direction.

I just tried a couple games in Arkanoid and had already built up to 5 extra lives in round 7 but then started moving my mouse a little too quickly and lose 4 lives from that input overflow crap.

Hmmmmm

I tried messing with the settings and got to a point where it felt OK to use it like that, but it seems that a paddle/spinner is the only way really... can't get enough precise control with the mouse :(

I think if you had one of those 2000dpi razer boomslang then you would have the precision.

I'm guessing most like me are using an optical mouse which for small movement just doesn't have the precision you really need. Most optical mice only have a precision of something around 400 or at most 600dpi.

A 2000dpi Razer would really make a difference I think.

Is anyone here using a Razer Boomslang for MAME?

Amen.

A little digging on the MAME forums and alt.games.mame convinced me that this was my problem on Centipede. Nothing the settings on my machine can do about it. I'd love to be able to play it on MAME.

I notice you've been doing pretty decently, though. :)

I tried the timed version a few times (figured I could put up with it for 3 minutes) but the most I was able to do was 37 something.

Razer Boomslang? Sounds like some weird off-shoot of Bitchkitty Wizbang.

My problem using the mouse is that I tend to go right/up or left/up instead of a pure lef or right as a spinner do.

Most of my mistakes are due to that fact. That´s why I need a spinner. The mouse will never be more than ok for me on those kind of games. Even if it is the best mouse in the world.

With a spinner i get full controll over that. With a mouse.. no way :(

Anders ,

I thought you had an Oscar Spinner ??

Oh and by the way , Ztnet will not allow me to order a MAME Tee-shirt . Why ? Because I tried to use the Globally ( not to mention Universally ) accepted MasterCard credit card for my purchase , which amazingly they don't accept . Gits....

Cheers ,

If you do a search on old threads about Arkanoid, there are links to building a spinner out of an old mouse and an Atari 2600 paddle. That's what I'll try next. Atari 2600 paddles were great, even if they only lasted for, oh, two days before breaking.

btw Rick, i hadn't realized that about optical mice. gotta love those times in Birdie King when your ball goes off in the *oposite* direction you hit it because it didn't pick up the read quick enough.
