I would like to watch the replay of the 1.1+ mil. R-Type game ( http://marp.retrogames.com/index.cgi?mo ... rt&tourn=0 ) but when I click on the "get MAME" link ( http://marp.retrogames.com/exe/mame3255.zip ) I get 404'd!

Any suggestions of what I need to do in order to watch this replay?

You need to click on "win55" to download the recording and get the MAME executable somewhere else.

Get MAME32 .55 from MAME.dk maybe.

I figure you came from here, btw. ^_^:

Yep, you are correct! I did arrive here from Funspot's forum.

Now...just so you know, I have no previous MAME programs on my computer. I placed the rtype_1171800.inp file in the inp folder but maybe I'm missing something here. I'm not having much luck with executeing the MAME program. I unzipped it and have the folder named "mame055b[1]". I open the folder and it appears to have all the files already in it. When I click on mame.exe a window appears but it immediately closes. Am I missing a step in the process?

As you might have figured out, I have limited experience setting up MAME. I thought it was a very simple process. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

I think I'm making some progress in figuring this out. My guess is that I need the R-Type ROM installed before I can view the replay of it. Can someone confirm this?

I have yet to find any mention of INP files or replaying games at either of the links. The only thing I'm attempting to accomplish is to view a replay. It's kind of funny that I don't even want to use MAME to play any games.

Oh well...I appreciate the efforts.

If you would use MAME32, like the replay was recorded with, you would have a much easier time figuring out how to playback the file. You downloaded the command line version, which might not play back the file (as it was recorded with MAME32), and of course, one that doesn't have a GUI. ;)

That would help wouldn't it. :? OK, I lost round 1...let's see how I do in round 2. Thanks! :D

At the beginning of Round 2 things looked good since there were no problems installing MAME32 and it opened right up. After that, I clicked on "File" and selected "Playback Input..." I only have one file to open in my "inp" folder which is the replay I downloaded - "rtype_1171800.inp" and after opening it I got a "MAME32 Error" pop-up window. If it helps, I've attaced an image of my screen showing this. I've lost Round 2 but it's not over yet!

If you got to mame.dk and look up r-type it will show you all the required files needed for the rom to work.

If any are missing it won't run, full stop. Once you've got all the files, check it runs and then try to playback the inp...

you need to find the full romset for rtype ... then check that the version you have is that same as the one the the player recorded with...

i'm glad you got everything to work, it is a blast wathcing cool scores, i'm guessing rtype isn't the only game you would like to see kick-a score fore, feel free to browse other games/recordings here and try to playback more that interest you :)

here's the marp search page link (best search engine on the net :) for finding that game you loved a long time ago and can bring back to life.
