Piranha

Post by LN2 »

I just got the newer version of this rom set for 0.71 and it's totally different from the "piranha" that was played in older versions of MAME.

The octopus values eating on blue are higher....and the video and side doors etc. are correct as they should be versus messed up as they are in the older "piranha" rom set.

Anyway, given this shouldn't the older scores be removed or separately listed?

You can't compare scores from this "piranha" with the older rom set scores.

Check it out and it's obvious.

I would assume that if it's a new romset, then the old one is now a clone. In which case, the recording just need to be moved.

Now that Gordon's ROM info page has been updated for 0.71 (finally), Pat should be able to easily figure this one out.

I analyzed the rom sets and have found that the older rom set "piranha.zip" is exactly the same as the newer rom piranhah.zip.

All the checksums for the individual rom files match.

Therefore all piranha scores using version 0.67 or older need to be moved over/grouped with the piranhah scores.

Piranha then needs to have special rules added perhaps just noting that you must be using mame 0.68 or newer so using the new rom set for "piranha".

Well my opinion is that if it's easy to get higher scores in the current MAME, then the old scores can be kept on the 'piranha' leaderboard until the users re-recorded their score - or until we have a new ROM name for the old set!

It's interesting that the set 'piranhao' seems to be a copy though!

The new 'piranha' rom set is a complete version of the game...not a cheap hack as the other version was..and has been renamed for mame 0.68 and later. It's MUCH harder to score high on the new piranha as the side doors are real side doors. Even if you could easily get higher scores the scores need to be moved to piranhah and piranha-fast scores moved to piranhah-fast cuz it's the same rom set. Your logic is faulty.

In the older "piranha" rom set you could easily get the monsters stuck along side the edge of the board by just having them try and follow you through the side door.

On later boards, you get 2-3 stuck in that then can easily clear the rest of the board with only the brown and perhaps blue monsters left....red abd pink stuck on edge of board.

This new piranha rom set for 0.68 and newer isn't flawed like that...which makes it a lot harder.

This new rom set is the actual piranha that was in arcades. That other set is just a hacked set.

You might still be able to get around 100k at regular speed...cuz you do get more points for eating the octopi....but since you likely aren't going to be clearing as many boards....hard to tell at this point.

This also would obviously also affect piranha-fast.

Oh, in that case then, I agree that the scores should eiother be moved or deleted.

Piranha INPs will be moved

I somehow missed this thread... sorry guys!

Note that all piranha and piranha-fast scores are older that mame68. This means that all the scores will be merged with the respective piranha hack versions and none will remain for the more difficult and authentic version.

Happy playing! :D

Thanks.

...however...although can't tell yet since no scores are submitted(I likely will do one this evening)...was a special rule added for "piranha" to only use 0.68 or later?

It's possible someone using an older version would play the older rom set and incorrectly submit the score under "piranha" instead of for piranhah.
