Hi, one of your regulars pointed me here, and I'd just like to say a few things...
First, I want to congratulate Barry on his decision to focus on maintaining a regular MAME version with playbackability fixes. I think this decision will improve the MARP community, and MAME in general, far more than you all realize right now.
Second, I want to dispel the myth that I took "way too much time" to hack AlphaMAME. IDA Pro and a couple of hours. Seriously.
Finally, I do want to apologize for the behavior of the friends I invited to #marp last night. I had no idea the conversation would turn out the way it did. Sorry about that!

it wasn't a decision, it was forced logical one path option :). I never said alphamame was impossible to hack. But, If it took you a couple hours you could have posted the encoder first and not the dissasembled source, heh. However, I'm glad you went public with it; you could have been a little bit less abrasive. I.e. you could have told barry how you did it and barry could have make it harder if not impossible for you to hack.
you haven't improved the marp community at all; you've basically put it back a few months. we'll continue detecting slowdowns with objective programs, we usually saw these show maybe a few times a week, before alphamame. After alphamame, there was a few analyzable slow downs in three months. You, niel, have basically shit on a good (even though already known imperfect) thing, instead of trying to make it a better thing. I guess you can still help but i'm not sure why you would.

I admit I put off doing the encoder at first, because I figured you'd take me seriously from the disassembly. But, it doesn't look like that was the case...Chad wrote:you could have posted the encoder first and not the dissasembled source

My point was that he couldn't have. Nobody can. Even assuming you find this holy grail of unbreakable encryption (despite the necessary client-side presence of keys and other encoding information), it would still be just as easy to add a slowdown to the AlphaMAME EXE itself and have it forge the recorded speed.Chad wrote:barry could have make it harder if not impossible for you to hack
You can either learn from this experience, or repeat your old mistakes. It looks like Barry's learned. I admire him for that.
Sorry Neill, but you are an ass!Neillparatzo wrote:You can either learn from this experience, or repeat your old mistakes. It looks like Barry's learned. I admire him for that.
You can't even realize how what you have done hasn't helped...but hurt the MARP community. Are you trying to make it where MAME can't be used for records anymore or something? wtf do you have against the MARP community?
99.9% of computer users aren't elite hackers like you. They couldn't have cheated without a hacker like you writing some inp conversion utility. Therefore the vast majority of "cheating" had been taken care of with alphamame. Nothing is 100% proof.
Of course we all knew it was possible...I don't know any commercial game that hasn't been hacked up to pieces with [k]s or things to enable cheats. I used to enjoy playing online games...but then hackers like you hacked the application to allow cheating etc. so you come across some cheaters here and there. Sorry, that isn't fun. I stopped playing.
I hope you never intended on submitting scores from here at MARP or TG. They won't be accepted even if they were honestly played.
Why is it people are scum and want to cheat so badly? If some 12 year old kid fine...but most here are adults. Wtf happened to morales and ethics etc. and integrity? Even if I had access to some easy way to cheat no way I would ever use it. I couldn't live with myself submitting scores played dishonestly.
I think most try and play by the rules etc. but if you dangle a utility in front of them that makes cheating fairly easy, then at least a few have going to use it. It's a shame a few percent have to screw things up for the rest of us.
Sorry the above is negative...but I think you deserve it. I'm pissed that you have obviously hurt Barry and hurt the MARP community...as well as perhaps hurt Twin Galaxies some as well.

So what the bloody hell do we do now? Is Alphamame even going to matter? Is Alphamame going to be allowed to still block others scores? And what happens when .71 is released? Are Alphamame versions going to take precidence over recordings with .71 of the same game?
Argh.. this has just got me frazzled...

Just a gaming junkie looking for his next High Score fix.
I just don´t undestand your logic, if we can stop 99.9% from cheating we should not do it, cause 0.1% can still cheat. So it´s better than everybody and their mom can cheat?Neillparatzo wrote:My point was that he couldn't have. Nobody can. I hope that Barry,me or somebody else to do a better, faster, uncutted and unhackable version of the AlphaMAME.Barry,if you want good encryption ideas my door is always open.Mr. Kelly R. Neill,a couple of hours is *already* a lot of time in programming stuff.I wonder where's the point in losing 3-4 hours of life for something that NOBODY asked to you...
And,on a different level,NOBODY asked to you to give your hypocritical statements. We aren't amazed at all about your stupid words and your lack of proper logic in your action."I respect Barry about bla, bla, bla";I surely don't respect anybody who loves to destroy others work and to be childishly proud about so...
