How to configure magic box (dreamcast adapter)

Post by MiSchmi »

Hi,
I just bought a 'Magic Box' (an USB-adapter for Dreamcast conctrollers [and PS II, Saturn]). Well, probably it's not the original 'Magic Box' as you get it from
http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?catego ... ts_id=1939
but some copy of it bought at http://www.play-asia.com/.
I plugged my Dreamcast Arcade-stick to it and tried using it with alphamame32-0.67 playing Crazy Kong. The 'Jump'-button works fine but I am unable to move.
In 'Control Panel/Game Controllers' there is a new Device ('USB Human Interface Device'). If I open 'Properties/Test' for it and use the joystick I see that some buttons are pressed.
But I don't know how to tell Mame that it should use these buttons as input for direction movement.
Can anyone tell me whether I have to configure the USB-Device or Mame?
And HOW?
bye,
michael

In MAME32 all you have to do is "Enable joystick input" under Controllers.
In 'Control Panel/Game Controllers' there is a new Device ('USB Human Interface Device'). If I open 'Properties/Test' for it and use the joystick I see that some buttons are pressed.
Does the stick work fine there when testing it?

It sounds strange that some buttons are pressed.

There is an FAQ at Lik-Sang. Maybe that can help you: http://www.lik-sang.com/faq.php?browse= ... ries_id=54

I did that.

Well, the testing area is divided in two parts: 'Axes' and 'Buttons'.
In the 'Axes' part you see a little cross that probably should move if I use the joystick (but it doesn't).
In the 'Buttons' part you see a lot of numbers (1 - 16) that are highlighted if you press one of the buttons on the joystick (works fine).
But if I move the joystick also some numbers are highlighted (left:16, right:14, up:13, down:15).
It seems as if the directions are also mapped to buttons (that might be correct, since the arcade stick is no analog joystick).
Maybe, I have to tell Mame somehow that it should use these buttons as input for directions.

I looked through the FAQ, but it only says that the Arcade stick should work.

Start a game, hit tab, select "Input (General)", move to "P1 Up", press Return and move your stick up. That will configure the P1 up key for every game.

It works, thanks a lot.
Finally, I have some use for that Dreamcast Arcade stick. I just bought it because it was cheap and I wanted to use it for playing mame on the dreamcast (but I don't like that version of mame).

I already tried really hard (my scores), but I have no clue how to beat those Crazy/Donkey Kong scores of Ben Jos Walbeehm

Do as Ben Jos did! Play Crazy kong for years (and nothing else) and you might beat him j/k :)
