In between my numerous attempts to finish daraku tenshi, I have started to play zookeeper for fun. Outside of watching SLA's amazing inps, does anyone have any tips on how to play the game?
On the TG forums, Ln2 said that the game was easy once a player learned a simple trick. Ln2, would you care to elaborate on what this trick or strategy is?
Thanks in advance.
Zookeeper tips anyone?

I didn't say "that". The key to zookeeper is once you are to the lion levels or later....just let all of the animals out quickly by just moving slowly in 1 direction. Almost all of the animals will escape and be moving in that same direction.
Once most are out then you can jump over them again and again for big points....far more points than what the captured animals are worth.
Plus during that time you can totally build up the walls so if the level ends with a hammer you can slightly delay getting the hammer so the timing of you getting the hammer you can hit many of them back into the cage and the level ends before they have a chance to escape.
However, even if you get like 500k from capturing animals, that's a lot less than what you can get by jumping them during that last part versus hitting them with a hammer.
As you likely saw in that thread...or possibly another thread....the jump values can get up to 1 million, 2 million, 4, etc.
Even if you don't go for those on the later "flashing" levels it's pretty easy to get 250,000 and 500,000 point jumps....at least it was in the arcade.
In mame I haven't been able to do that cuz control with the keys just isn't as good as it was with the arcade joystick. You really need to wiggle well during your hang time of a jump to land just between 2 animals before you start your next jump.
The real key to the game is learning how to get past the extra man level....versus losing all of your men trying to get an extra man.
I always felt that was flawed designed. If you fail on your first attempt then you should just go to the next level so you lost getting the extra man. It's odd the game makes you try it over and over again where if you don't know how to get over that 4th cage in the later ones your game is over. I remember even for that getting 500+k just from those jumps for that extra man.

Hello Ln2. In the TG forums you said:
Sorry for the paraphrase though, I didn't mean anything negative by it.
Thanks for the tips. I did notice that SLA would somehow get many of the animals moving in the same direction. I just wasn't sure what he was doing.
How good were you at coconut jumping? I know the TG people feel it is a cheap technique and I think they have banned it. Personally I find it really difficult to do, and usually die before I can make an 80k jump. Do you think it is possible to coconut leech on all the stages where the platforms are visible? Do you think its pointless because you can get more points in a safer manner by playing the game "straight"?
Thanks again.
All that hard, easy, apples and orangesI never felt zookeeper was all that hard after you learn the simple "trick" to make stages much easier and to allow for greater odds of those big point jumps.

I would perhaps leech off the top platform 2-3 times for each coconut level if it was safe. However it was no more than a few times so is ok.
The main points are in the big jumps over tons of animals as well as survive. Just learn to setup the animals for easier and safer jumping.
Screw the items for points etc. as well unless they are handy for the taking. Just concentrate on jumping those animals over and over and over.
On the later rounds cuz there are so many animals I would just hold down the jump button most of the time so as soon as you land you immediately go into another jump...then it's just a matter of wiggling properly in the air so you can land and jump again off a tiny safe spot.
Getting most of the animals moving the same direction is the key which I mentioned above. If you are wiggling at the start to try and form some wall that's a mistake as then the animals come out running opposite directions which makes the game extremely harder than it needs to be...plus can't line up those gigantic jumps as easily as when most are moving the same direction. A few will still be going around the other direction but just a few if you did it right.
