The following is legal?

Post by Luja »

I want to ask if the following configuration is legal.

I've a problem with the cordless keyboard. For example, in "king of dragons, the", to do the magic, you must press at the same time the fire button and the jump button. If I do so, the game do nothing.

If I configure the game as follows, it works fine for me:

P1 Button 1: CTRL left or CTRL right (fire)
P1 Button 2: ALT left or CTRL right (jump)

In this way, if I press the right CTRL, I can do the special feature magic.

But, is this configuration legal? Or my inp will be rejected?

Obviously, if anyone tells me how to correct my control problem.... (fantastic)

My desktop:
Athlon 1700
Windows XP
512 RAM
Genius Wireless TwinTouch+ (keyboard)

this is a gray area, and up to Pat to decide for sure. If you think of it like an arcade, you certainly couldn't press one button and have two be pressed at the same time, so on those grounds its certainly a no. But people have brought pens and pencils into the aracade to do this, although it requires additional skill to make it work and you won't always get both pressed at the same time unless you have perfect skill. You can also use a simlar thing on the keyboard although it would be harder. I would go ahead and not map the key to two buttons untill you hear otherwise from pat.

Luja, yes some keyboards have those kinds of combo limitations for certain keys. It's just for certain combos though...so test and find another combo that does work.

Perhaps you can make those 2 buttons the letters d and g for example....or perhaps even put them on your numpad somewhere.

If you have a multi-button mouse you could even still use the 1 game button off a key but the other off a mouse button.

I agree it's a very gray area making 1 key serve as more than 1 game button.

I'm actually surprised the mame code allows it and deals with it ok.
Maybe that is something else that could be added to alphamame to restrict assigning keys already assigned?

Re: Configuring 2 keys as one

Well check out my 'stompin' inp :). I configured 4 or 5 keys onto 1 key! So I can constantly bash all the directions by pressing just a couple of keys instead of 8! No one has complained yet but my score has remained unconfirmed for over 2 years now.

Some games are bit more subtle though, there was a debate once about configuring one key to move right and jump simultaneously in a certain platform game in order to pull of a special move. Basically if you don't say anything you'll get away with it IMO.

Cheers, Gaz.

that's so true, that's why alphamame is so important (IMHO). We can detect the multiple key-mappings so eventually if there is a debate we can check old recordings but this isn't a big as issue as others...

Thanks for all of your responses.

I find my problem. It was the cordless keyboard. (the Genius Wireless Wintouch+ keyboard doesn´t permit you to press 2 keys at the same time; if there aren´t predefinided like Shift+, Ctrl+....) I have to change it by my old keyboard.

All in order to make legal inps! This gives me points to be a confirmer, Chad? I hope yes!

IMHO all your recent posts Luja have earned you points toward becoming a confirmer down the road. :D

I see you have a nice start for scores at MARP also. :P

Shame that cordless keyboard sucks. :!: Why on earth would anyone want that if no 2 keys other than modified keys can be pressed at the same time? That design makes no sense to me. I hope you didn't pay a lot for it. If you haven't had it long I would consider returning it if you bought it at a store. I know I would have returned it the next day after seeing that limitation.

I don´t understand this limitation too. At last, I have another keyboard that goes fine, although it isn´t cordless.

About my scores, I amn´t not very happy with a few. I've to improve some of them, like Golden Axe 2 (both), Cabal (two) and King of Dragons (all). We see...
