"Gentlemen to your racing machines ! The race of a lifetime is about to begin! The challenge has been made !

"Don't be fooled by the simplicity of the Test Track ! This course is designed to provide the ultimate test of your racing machine! Your driving skills will be pressed to speed of over 260 mph!"

-- Kevin McMann - Starcade Announcer describing Pole Position II

Yeah, we're going to play the Test Track, the easiest track in the game.

We are aware of bad emulation in WOLFMAME 106 with this game, where the maximum speed is much less than it's supposed to be. However, this was corrected in later MAME versions. Therefore, we will be requiring WOLFMAME 119 for this game only.

Gameboy9 thinks that more people will defeat this game than Pang... but again, we shall see. If you're no good at this game, there's always part 3 before the first elimination down to 36 players !
Good luck !

NOW, if you're not familiar with command line, DON'T WORRY !
------
Follow these instructions :

Download :
http://wolfmame.marpirc.net/wolfmame-0119.exe
and
http://mahlemiut.marpirc.net/mmf13.zip
and my mame.zip file. It contains a mame.ini default file which will help you or you need to create it by yourself
------
Create a folder (for the example : mame119)

extract wolfmame-0119.exe
unzip mmf13.zip
unzip mame.zip

create those folders :
inp
snap
rom

Then you must create a blank file named nvram to avoid wolf creating polepos2.nv

First, control that windows doesn't hide extension for know files.
- Open explorer
- Go in the menu
Image
- Uncored the option on the snap
Image
And click on apply

Now, go in you mame119 folder
Go in the Explorer Menu
File > New > Text File
Rename the file in nvram without extension.
Now you're ready to play without nvram.

Another solution easier consists in delete nvram folder each time you record a new game but you mustn't forget it or it won't playback correctly.

Place rom polepos2.zip in the rom folder

Now you are ready to record your inp (i hope).
------
The first time you record or play, you must define your controller settings and EXIT :

Push on TAB > Input (this game)

Change the settings as shown on the snap :
To change the settings, select it with keyboard and cursor and push on the button or key you want to use

- Gear Change : choose your button
- P1 Pedal 1 Analog : select and push escape key to have None
- P1 Pedal 1 Inc : choose your button
- P1 Pedal 2 Analog : select and push escape key to have None
- P1 Pedal 2 Inc : choose your button

If you use analog pad, stick or mouse :
- Dial Analog : You can use your mouse or analog pad or push escape key to have None
- Dial Dec : (LEFT DIRECTION) Select and push escape key to have None
- Dial Inc : (RIGHT DIRECTION) Select and push escape key to have None

If you don't use analog pad, stick or mouse (recommended) :
- Dial Analog : Select and push escape key to have None
- Dial Dec : (LEFT DIRECTION) define your button
- Dial Inc : (RIGHT DIRECTION) define your button

Note : it will surely be easier if you don't use analog settings but you do like you want.

Image

------

TO RECORD AN INP :

Open mmf.exe

Choose the game (Pole Position II [polepos2]
Clic on Record INP
At the end, the polepos2.inp will be saved in the inp folder

Game - Pole Position II (polepos2) - Test Track
Ugh, one of my most hated games
Gameboy9 thinks that more people will defeat this game than Pang
I definitely will NOT be one of these people.

I think it goes without saying that more people will "defeat" this game than Pang, if by defeat you mean completing all laps.

oh, it was fixed in 119? cool...wish I had submitted something for pang now....anything.

not sure it is worth even submitting for last 2 cuz hard to get into top 36 unless many others don't submit for all 3.

even then, likely near bottom meaning in first elimination I will face top players...

maybe I will play this...see if I can match or top my above score.

if I can't, can I revert to my current one after this week is official?

As of version 0.112u2 and higher, MAME emulates the NAMCO 54xx sound chip. For all pertinent NAMCO games (Galaga, Xevious, and, yes, Pole Position 2 to name a few), a file named "54xx.bin" was added to the rom image zipfile.

So, you need to locate an updated polepos2.zip file, or extract the "54xx.bin" from one of the other NAMCO roms and add it to your current polepos2.zip file.

(I didn't know any of this an hour ago......spent 45 minutes searching around Google until I found what I needed. Now if I can only improve the control scheme from "intolerable" to merely "crappy", maybe I can get somewhere with this game....)

does 119 have something like older versions had like -nonvram?

I tried -nonvram and -nvram 0 and -nocheat and it doesn't seem to recognize any of these.

why can't they leave these args alone? geesh

is there any point in even having a brake button without analog control? I tapped it once and couldn't get back up to full speed again. Maybe because it thought the pedal was partially pressed down or something. I've just disabled the button entirely since letting go of the accelerator provides a pretty big speed drop in the first place.
