Question regarding playback of older inps

Hello all,

I was wondering if I need to download an emulator of sorts that will mimic an older computer (perhaps Win98) in order for me to watch INP's recorded from much older versions of MAME. Every time I try to view inps from back in the day, I keep getting this error:

In order to run 15/20 years old versions of MAME you need a version of Windows that supports DOS (and not only the command prompt).

You can achieve it by using a Virtual Machine like Virtualbox or VMWare.
Or use DOSBox and install the MAME executable in it.

Technically you can also use MAME inside MAME, by using either at486 or ct486 drivers and install DOS via that but then inflating files is non-trivial so I'm not suggesting that.
Also inps might desync or sport emu bugs, nobody really tested the older MARP inps with this method afaik.

You can also try to playback your inp with a Windows version of Mame. Sometimes it desyncs, sometimes it works.

I regularly use DOS Box to run these older versions for checking. It's non-trivial but with practice, old knowledge can be rekindled. :)

Thanks Kale for the info. Unfortunately, I still have no idea what I'm doing. I downloaded DOSBox and unzipped the m33b3 emulator into the folder with DOSBox and then went to "mount" the C drive and got all kinds of errors. I don't know how to use DOSBox which I believe is my problem. This mounting stuff isn't making sense. This is what I typed in DOSBox: MOUNT c d:\m33b3 and it didn't work.

I'm not using DOSBos since quite some time, but if I remeber well, you should create a folder like d:\OldMAME\.... and eventually multiple folders inside (i.e. m33b3), and then mount that folder as a drive:
mount x: d:\OldMAME
After that, in DOSBox, just type
x:
cd m33b3
and there you go.....

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.....

Cicca,

Thanks a million. I'll give it a try and see what I come up with.

All the INP's are actually the ones I've uploaded to MARP since '98. I'm in the process of converting all of the them to MP4's so that I can upload them to my YouTube channel. I use OBS to play them back and then re-record them to MP4's. Many of them were played on these much older versions and it would be great if I can include them in my library. A few that I wouldn't mind watching again, would be atetris (1,166,632), digdug (1,438,820), m79amb (20,000), pang (2,847,830), puzzledp (12,772,004), sidearmsur1 (1,739,900) to name a few. :)

Why not re-take using newer wolfmame again? I made so many ugly junk replays 10+ years ago.
now I try to make "decent" replays using newer versions.

unfortunately VERY FEW SUCCESS as expected.
