About the counterstop

Post by Krj »

Hi, could someone explain what is exactly the counterstop?

I searched but I only discover that, in some games, there are some "situations" that make the player to do infinite points.
I know that there is the countestop in bubble bobble and wonder boy in the monster land but I did not find any infos or videos about it.

Regards

It's when the score is 9,999,999 or 999,990 for example.

I know, but what is the non-legit techique to achieve that score?
Could you link me any inp or video of some games like the two in my previous post?

For Bubble Bobble, you just keep playing. A 1 player game never ends, so you keep going until you hit 9,999,990. I'm sure there are a few (probably older) INPs showing this on MARP... EDIT: Here's one: http://replay.marpirc.net/inp/8/f/a/zek ... _win59.zip (Needs MAME 0.59) More here: http://replay.marpirc.net/r/boblbobl
For WBML, it most likely involves leeching those grey fireball things, which are worth about 30k each. Probably in round 10, also, since the time limit is restored for each screen you enter, and you can loop back as often as want.

For Wonderboy in Monsterland, watch my wbmlb replay and you'll understand how it's done (round 11).
I didn't stay long enough to reach 9,999,990 just because I didn't want to (I stopped when the 30k enemies stopped giving awards) but you can see there's little risk involved.
In fact there is more than one place in rnd.11 where you can leech as much as you want from the 30k enemies, but that place you can see on my replay is the safest in my opinion.
It's worth mentioning that it can't be done on all versions, e.g. on the current wbml parent set, it can't be done because time doesn't reset between "scenes" so you will eventually die if you stay too long.
I suggest you play the parent set, which prevents players with too much free time (like me, lol) from doing this.
Another way to discourage people from doing it (if we want to adjust MARP rules) is simply to use the GOLD for scoring.

WHen you max out a counter in a game, and it refuses to go higher, that's a counterstop. It is the maximum possible score for a game.

Some counterstops are legit, and some are reached through infinite leeching.

The following are legit counterstops.
1) Bubble Bobble, unless you are leeching bubble pops, which takes AGES, and can really only be done safely on one level. it's faster, safer, and more point rich to just play honestly.
2) Sega Tetris. this game is routinely counterstopped in japan on arcade hardware. both with just the score counter, and with the lines and level counters as well. It can be counterstopped rapidly by using foreknowledge of the poweron state to string together bravos that score 10x points, or it can be counterstopped the hard way, by not getting bravos, and playing until you have sore 999,999, 99 levels, and 999 lines. The game generates a 1000 piece sequence at start of play, and then loops it, guaranteeing that it can be played forever if you know the sequence.
