Just a short test to see if the compiler update makes much difference...

Values are speed%, as displayed when MAME exits.
First is for MAME 0.118u6, compiled using GCC 3.4.2, second for MAME 0.118, compiled with GCC 4.2.1

Commandline parameters are -norc, -nothrottle, -str 30

sfiiin (Capcom CPS-3) : 247.40% : 251.23%
galaga (Namco Galaga hardware): 551.44% : 555.36%
cotton2 (Sega ST-V) : 165.39% : 162.54%
beastrzr (Raizing/Sony ZN-1) : 106.29% : 100.53%
strider (Capcom CPS-1) : 446.05% : 452.85%

Mahlemiut, check out how rsgun (Radiant silvergun, ST-V hardware) runs both in mame 118 and u6.....

rsgun (Sega ST-V) : 0.118u6 = 143.86% : 0.118 = 138.89%

I extended the length (-str) to 60 seconds, but that's still not long enough to get to an in-game demo.

One more list, this time using MAME 0.119u1 compiled using Visual C++ 2005 Express:

sfiiin : 228.75%
galaga : 229.91% (what?!?)
cotton2 : 169.61%
beastrzr : 98.00%
strider : 248.59% (again... what?!?)

Just finished building a new system after my old one died on me:

Motherboard: ASUS Socket 775 P5K3 Deluxe WiFi edition
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 3GHz, 2GB DDR3 RAM
Graphics: XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra XXX, 675MHz factory overclocked
Sound: Onboard SoundMAX
OS: Windows XP SP2 Home
Desktop res: 1152x864

Benchmark script:
mame119.exe %1 -seconds_to_run %2 -skip_gameinfo -nothrottle -nohws -multithreading -video d3d -triplebuffer

Average Speed Results:

Code: Select all

Game str Ave speed

invaders 600 1105%
tbyahhoo 60 837%
stunrun 60 453%

sfiiin 60 695%
galaga 200 2686%
strider 100 1748%
rsgun 100 374%
The -multithreading makes a big difference on a multi-core CPU system especially for the faster games.

the old Conroe has been replaced by a Penryn E8500.
just started playing a bit with it (1280*1024/XP SP3/-skip_gameinfo -nothrottle -nohws -mt -video d3d -triplebuffer) :

Anyone feel like running the benchmarks for the latest CPUs to see how they fare? I assume the Ryzen range won't benefit that much from its 8 cores since MAME is mainly single core driven but it would be interesting to see how it fares against Kabylake for example and especially because I want to build myself a new comp pretty soon. Still running on 32 bit here :).

Well, I did finally get a new (cheapo) system about a month ago, probably about time this thread was updated. :)
