Post by Jump »

input files are "confirmed" by trying to run mame -playback file.inp
and if the playedback mame plays back to the score submited, the
recording is confirmed. Sometimes this is not easy because certain
settings used when recording a inp file must be specificall set when
playing back the file to get it to playback to the exact score
intended.

Inps are also "verified" for certain forms of cheating (slowdowns and
autofire) by the editors. But i'm not sure what you mean "to be sure
it's not an old one with a big score just take on the net???"

I think he Jump talks about the stealing of other guys inp files at
another site and uploading it to marp.

Ex If I take a certain 13.5 mil recording of 1942 from Hisa´s site
(not possible without the URL off course :=) and upload it to marp in
my name.

Cheers

oh duh :)

well this can be done, and there really isn't a guard against it, the
only moral is that everyone enter their intials at the end of the
game and if someone uploads a recording with two very different
initials there might be some suspect about it. i don't think this
has been a problem to as large an extent as other forms of inp
falsifying.

In the new tournament version of mame (MAMETE), Ben Jos has been
working on (or putting off) for a while, this issue might be solved
because each inp will have an individual encrypted signature so time
stamp (and perhaps machine name/user/ip the game was recorded on)
falsifying may not be so easy as it is now.

Even if you could get to Hisa's site, he always signs with HIS, so if
Jump uploaded a recording signed as HIS it would be disqualified. Of
course if you find unInitialSigned recordings and marp and upload
them as your own, they too could also be dqued because the inp file
would be the same as someone else uploaded (this would require a
large inp file comparison check at marp but it could be done)

Ah, but what would happen if you achieved a great score and cocked up
the entering of your initials at the end? For a game like Zookeeper
for example it is not possible to 'rub' an incorrect initial.

yep, or if two people have the same Initials! who's recording is
whose? lots of problems here, that could be fixed with a more secure
mame (with encryped signatures), which we may get but not soon.

Have there been any isssues were an INP was claimed by multiple
people? It really shouldn't be hard to figure out, just by reputation.
Besides, most players are honest.

tournaments usually don't go by honest and they shouldn't. There
have been no issues that i'm aware of where players disputed
ownership of an inp.
