Re: Arcade Club, Bury UK

Good to see you've still got it AL, I certainly haven't, not in energy nor focus, but maybe with some training... I was dab hand at Hypersports back in the day, I was getting perfects on the archery every other day but chaining those 8000 moles was key. Those weighlifting records in the screenshots ...

Re: Benchmarks

It's that time again. Got meself an i5-8600K and naturally the first thing one does with a new system is benchmark it with MAME! Mame now has a -bench switch so I decided to use that. From the MAME docs this is what -bench does. -bench [n] Benchmark for [n] number of emulated seconds; implies the co...

Re: Benchmarks

Thanks for that, Moore's law is at an end. We're still getting faster but at a slower and slower rate.

Re: Benchmarks

Anyone feel like running the benchmarks for the latest CPUs to see how they fare? I assume the Ryzen range won't benefit that much from its 8 cores since MAME is mainly single core driven but it would be interesting to see how it fares against Kabylake for example and especially because I want to bu...

Re: back in the olde days....

how comes it hasn't been verified in 10 years? I'm told the confirmers die of boredom after the first couple million. how many sheets did you do it in? I don't remember. The key to a long game is to plan for the next sheet in advance especially the hard ones. Get the right number of firebombs on th...

Re: back in the olde days....

Still got my ZX81 in the loft complete with 16k RAM pack. I sold my BBC micro to a mate for £100 quid when I got my Archimedes which in turn was replaced by an A5000 which ended up in the dustbin when I couldn't sell it but a least I made a few quid selling some games I'd written for it. I don't pla...

Re: Inconsistent Pac-man Patterns in MAME

If there's a pattern break then you haven't followed the pattern pixel-perfectly by not turning into corners before you reach them etc. Or maybe your machine decided to 'freeze' for 1 or 2 frames while you made a turn which would break the pattern, this is what happened to me in my split screen atte...

The lowest high score on MARP?

Just for fun and trivia, what is currently the lowest high score on MARP?

Minivader high score is 87 but Kageki (US) is even lower at 6!

Any advance on 6?

Re: 1 Million points on Gauntlet II

Watched this myself a couple days ago. He sure knows all the levels inside out and has a plan for every one. Also remarkably sharp with the diagonal firing through gaps from a distance and takes no chances with the thief. Well done Jonathan! Reminds of the days I was obsessed with the original Gaunt...

Re: Direct Links to MARP Pages

Was having the same problem just now using Firefox 3. My Adblock filters were blocking the top frame, adding this exception rule fixes it.

Probably generated them randomly using the level number as the initial rng seed.

Re: Favourite games from the 80's (MSN Forums)

Yup, Elite came out originally on the "Beeb". Spent a few hours on it myself, I can even remember the sequence of levels you went through on the way to "Elite". Harmless, Mostly Harmless, Poor, Average, Above Average, Competent, Dangerous, Deadly, Elite. It did a great job of giv...

Re: Favourite games from the 80's (MSN Forums)

I never owned a speccy, I was a BBC Micro man. I was always around friends houses playing on their spectrums though. Games that come to mind are The Alchemist, The Manic Miner & JSW games of course, Starblitz, Wild West Hero, Wheelie, Lunar Jetman, Styx, Nightmare Park etc.
